A Moment’s Respite

“Out of the way, Tenno.” Wolf said coldly, “I’m not going to hurt her, idiot.”

With the Tenno refusing to move, Wolf grit his teeth in anger, his hand going to his sword.

“I said, out of the way.” Wolf growled, “Do not test me, Tenno. You’re on my lands, you do as I say.”

To that, the Trinity Prime gave a quick tilt of the head, as if to draw Wolf’s attention to something near them.

If Wolf looked, he would have seen several well-concealed figures just beyond the edge of the clearing. Plenty of other Tenno, all with their weapons lined on him.

…was that a Lenz one of them held?!

The healer Warframe got up silently, pacing around Wolf and the still-seated Yellow, who was trying to wordlessly request that the Tenno around them settle down.

If Wolf acted rashly, he was still outnumbered 20 to 1. Every Tenno sent to guard her was packing ridiculous levels of firepower.

“Well, you wanted to speak to me?” Yellow asked, trying to defuse the situation.

“You do realize you can’t kill me, right?” The Aurelien warlord yelled at the Tenno, “Idiots, the whole lot of you. Could you at least give us some privacy, please? This is a bit of a personal situation!”

With a sigh (and a particularly strong swear word in the Aurelien tongue uttered under his breath, only audible to Yellow), he looked to Yellow.

“I’m sure as a medical officer, you’re familiar with the psychological disorders side of it, yes? Like, PTSD?” He asked, leaning up against a tree, “Look, I’m having flashbacks, there’s this feeling of dread… I don’t know if I can take much more… And Green… He reminds me too much of old me… Just with a better grasp of tactics and even more dedicated to war… And it’s seriously fucking with my head.”

The Tenno surrounding them lowered their weapons reluctantly. The one with the Lenz seemed particularly dejected, a compatriot consoling them with a few pats of the shoulder.

Meanwhile, Yellow sighed as she considered her options. “Wolf, I will be frank…despite our advances in contemporary and esoteric medical science, psychological disorders and treatment remain a grey area.”

“I cannot just give you some magic pill that would simply cure you of the dread you experience. And whatever your thoughts on Green and you may be, that is a matter for yourself to face. Medication can only go so far.”

She sighed as the pacing Trinity Prime crossed their vision. “And while there are…other methods…of helping you, any and all of those constitute severe violations of sophont rights under both the Initiative and Coalition Charters. Es tut mir leid, Kaiser.

Imagine going to the market in a post scarcity society, leisurely picking out cereal knowing there is no checkout, no worries about money, just picking out what you need, and chatting with your shopping buddy.

Imagine how that would feel.

Nah man imagine just queueing up your favourite cereal on a food 3-d printer while an autonomous drone delivers daily shipments of food chemicals from an robotically operated self-sufficient supply plant that generates the food from bioengineered fungi feeding off of waste products, with the power for the whole system coming from solar hydrogen plants or cold fusion reactors

imagine how fucking rad that would be compared to going to a store

Not that rad actually, like the production side can stay but I like going to the store, also fungus is horrible

what is solarpunk???? i saw a post you reblogged and I’ve never heard of it and I’m very confused…

vergess:

Oh dear. I’m not super qualified to make this definition. It’s a really complex term which is used interchangeably to refer to a socialist/communist/anticapitalist post scarcity speculative fiction genre, an aesthetic relating to greenery, lights, and improved connection with local and historical traditions relating to your area and heritage, and a political movement seeking to dismantle destructive systems of industry and society to create dramatic change that helps protect and improve lives starting from the bottom up.

Most of the criticism about solarpunk seems to stem from assuming the aesthetic is the only part of the movement/community, or that conflict is somehow impossible

Anyway that’s not really going to help you with definitions.

So, what is solarpunk.

Well, it’s a movement towards increasing sustainable living on the micro and macro levels, through personal action and attempts at unified political movement. It’s supporting “ethical” businesses in the now, as a stepping stone for getting towards that post-capitalism, post-scarcity world where identity and culture can truly be explored and celebrated without fear that the cost of merely existing is too high for some people to pay. Eventually, with a properly egalitarian system that ensures life and access for all, power shifts are in place to prevent things like this from happening too, but obviously we aren’t there yet.

Solarpunk is an attempt to fundamentally alter the way we interact with eachother, our world, and those generations that will follow us.

It’s about finding a way to create “everyone’s needs are given equal weight” style equality, with improved accessibility and stability. As well as to simultaneously to reduce corporate and consumer waste and restrictions to enable that equality to be achieved without further detriment to the biosphere.

It’s solar panels meets punk mentality, with a layer of glossy, pretty ideals for the future that we can hold in our hearts with hope, while we busy ourselves with getting filthy to tear down all the walls that are stopping us from getting there.

prokopetz:

Here’s a fun little worldbuilding thought experiment for all us writers.

Stories with post-scarcity settings – that is, settings where basic goods and services are available in effectively unlimited quantities due to replicators, robots, etc. – often propose that money would be a thing of the past, since obviously nobody would ever need to buy anything. However, this perspective often overlooks the problem of intrinsically scarce luxuries.

Formally, an intrinsically scarce luxury is something that’s inherently impossible to replicate or obtain in unlimited qualities, due to prestige, geographic barriers, or other factors. Examples include living space near particular landmarks (e.g., there can only be so many houses with a good view of Niagara Falls), possession of antiques or collectibles (e.g., even if you can produce as many copies of a particular book as you want, the number of books from the very first edition is finite, and will tend to diminish over time as copies are lost or destroyed), and so forth.

Of course, most intrinsically scarce luxuries are pretty hoity-toity stuff, so the problem is often framed in terms of something a little more relatable: concert tickets. Nearly everyone loves music, and live musical performances are intrinsically scarce because musical artists aren’t interchangeable: you don’t want to see any musical artist perform, you want to see that particular musical artist perform. For this reason, the problem of intrinsically scarce luxuries is sometimes known as the Concert Ticket Problem.

To address a couple of basic objections, it’s true that access can be maximised by having frequent performances in large venues, until the number of available seats exceeds the number of prospective attendees, but for extremely popular artists, it may actually be impossible in practice to hit that ratio. Besides, what if a popular artist doesn’t want to put on massive daily shows in giant arenas? What if they want to perform only rarely, or in smaller, more intimate venues? Certainly, as artists that’s their right.

Likewise, the problem could be obviated by having the artist personally pick and choose who gets to attend, but some artists may not care who comes to their shows, or just won’t want to deal with the hassle, so this isn’t a universally applicable solution.

So how do you determine who gets those tickets?

That’s the thought experiment in a nutshell: if you’re writing a story with a post-scarcity setting – or even if you aren’t, and just want to try it out for fun – how does your setting’s society solve the Concert Ticket Problem?

(For bonus points, if you’re aiming for a moneyless post-scarcity setting in particular, propose a system that isn’t vulnerable to being gamed or manipulated in a way that amounts to re-inventing money.)
