Tempest was among one of the first to speak up.

“Does that mean we’ll be turning off the gravity as well?” She asked excitedly. Now that her worries had been laid to rest, she could look forward to her holographic excursion.

Aegis nodded. “Indeed, in a manner of speaking. The holodeck can simulate zero-G conditions. Anyway, let’s get this ball rolling, shall we?”

With a snap of her fingers and a simultaneous triggering of the holographic omni-tool around her wrist, the environment around the assembled shipgirls transformed into a virtually indistinguishable replica of open space, with a random sun-lit planet off in the distance.

Most of the new shipgirls were caught by surprise, quite a few giggling at the familiar feeling of zero-gravity. The seniors, a mix of cruisers and dreadnoughts, had already manifested their rigging, cradling the gleaming double-barreled or triple-barreled rifles that represented their main spinal guns.

Those who saw Aegis deploy her own rigging were treated to an awe-inspiring sight. The Titan’s rigging was colossal compared to the young woman who wore it, befitting of her nature as a Titan.

And her primary weapon was easily one of the largest rifles ever seen, with five large barrels.

“Alright! Everyone who hasn’t already, do your best to bring your rigging out. Once that’s done, have your AIs sync up. We’ll form a temporary battle network.”

Aegis directed a brief smile at Tempest, knowing the carrier was more than able to do these. The video logs she’d seen of her combat test were impressive.

Despite her short time as a human, Tempest had no issues in manifesting her rig. She did feel a little jealous of the other girls and their rifles, when all she had was a crossbow and her backpack, even if it was loaded to the brim with fighter-bolts and drones.

She looked around at the other girls. Unless she was mistaken, she had yet to see another carrier here. Perhaps there was another among the Threes that had yet to deploy their rigs, but until they all had, she wouldn’t know for sure.

Tempest then stared at Aegis and her rigging in awe. She almost wished she could be a Titan for a chance to wear such a thing, even though that would be impossible.

Meanwhile, Adrianna began connecting to the AIs of those around her, integrating wholly into the network.

Once the battle network was fully formed up, Aegis glanced around again, putting her attention on the newer Threes as they manifested their rigging bunch by bunch.

Most were cruisers, a dignified-looking few were dreadnoughts, and there were even two carrier shipgirls. The two carriers steadily maneuvered over to Tempest, waving as they noticed their rigging was similar to hers.

Like her, they also wielded repeating crossbows. Their secondary Relay Guns were out now, sweeping idly for targets.

Aegis’s voice sounded again. “Now, first things first. Whether as primary or secondary armament, your Relay Guns are hyperluminal mass drivers that fire kinetic impactors. And any kinetic projectile follows Newton’s Laws of Motion.”

“If you fire your Relay Gun into open space, it’s projectile will continue on its path until it hits something. At the velocities that even secondary guns can generate at their full power, a single shot can and will have enough kinetic energy to inflict catastrophic damage to planetary surfaces. The same sort of impact to most if not all known starships is enough to be an instant kill.”

Aegis paused, letting that information sink in. She couldn’t understate how absurdly lethal a Relay Gun was, and by extension how much power any of them wielded.

Hearing all that from the receptionist made Yellow bow her head a little more. He was right, really. Sooner or later she would be noticed.

And if not by Astrid, then one of her clergy, assuming they were widespread. If that was the case, then the best she could do was to just prolong that time.

“Yes. If I will be heard of eventually, I’d rather my reputation be a good one. Where do I start?”

The receptionist pointed to an electronic board that had a bunch of adventurers standing nearby it.  On that board were various requests made by others for the Guild to accomplish.  “Just pick a job and start doing in,” the receptionist mentioned.  “You’ll get paid well for your troubles as well.”

Yellow glanced over at said job board, then bowed to the receptionist. “I will. Thank you…”

Walking over to where the adventurers were looking at the board’s details, the blonde made sure to stand off to the side so that she wouldn’t obscure the view from others.

Well. Those were a lot of jobs. She wondered if there were deliveries or supply-gathering jobs she could do. Sure, the receptionist had said those could involve some level of combat, but Yellow was fairly sure she could handle small fights.

The Book of Names lists each person murdered at Auschwitz

#and you have to remember how many names are most likely missing#from rushed trains and burned lists#from rushed transports and people who died on the death marchs#what about the names from people who died after their liberation#and then…#this is only Auschwitz#this was the biggest camp yes#but just one of many#and then remember sobibor and belsec#and try not to feel sick

This is why we punch Nazis. This is why this vile ideology must be stamped out viciously every time it tries to come out of its hole.

Never. Again.

“Perhaps in spirit and not in name,” Yellow answered while bowing her head slightly, her long ponytail rising just a hint. “I wish to help people out, like adventurers do, but…quietly.”

The blonde made sure to carefully emphasize that last word. She didn’t want to draw any undue attention to herself.

“I’m sorry. I know it must be strange to ask that.”

“If you’re not wanting to be heard about, you’re picking the wrong line of work,” the receptionist mentioned, the expression on his face seeming somewhat annoyed with Yellow’s request to remain anonymous.  “Even if you pick the menial jobs, you’ll get a reputation attached to you at some point or another, and folks will start asking you specifically to do bigger jobs because of that reputation.

“And that, of course, doesn’t factor in surprise complications.  Sometimes someone comes to us asking for what sounds like a simple job, even something as simple as a delivery.  That won’t stop random encounters with monsters or rebels out on the field while making that delivery, and then you’ll have to fight to survive.

“Hell, sometimes those simple jobs we get asked to do turn into something much bigger because the guy asking us to do them either failed to mention or wasn’t aware of a bigger problem that was the root of his first issue, and then we gotta clean up that bigger problem for them so it doesn’t come back.

“Don’t bother trying to help people if you aren’t wanting to be heard about.  Folks will find out about you at some point if you do that.  Now that I’ve said this, you still sure you want to do Adventuring work?”

Hearing all that from the receptionist made Yellow bow her head a little more. He was right, really. Sooner or later she would be noticed.

Physics on a Dry Morning

(Closed starter for @secondshipgirlsquadron )

The morning after Aegis had met the newly returned Tempest Eternal, she sat waiting in the appointed holodeck for her first gunnery training lesson.

Those selected were now steadily trickling in, most greeting the Titan with excited awe and some with respectful nods.

Internally, Aegis was going over her notes again. Most of the shipgirls in this lesson were of the Third Wave, still relatively new to their human forms and how combat with it worked.

Some, however, were older shipgirls who had materialized years ago and wanted to help their newer comrades out. And who better to conduct this training than the Initiative’s flagship?

At least, that was the rationale behind it.

Aegis checked her internal chronometer again. There was still some time before this training session was scheduled to begin. Hopefully, Tempest would arrive soon enough.

Tempest arrived only slightly early. She wasn’t expecting the others to be even earlier than herself, but she put that down to eagerness. She didn’t particularly want to do this, but the Vice Admiral had recommended it, and Aegis had asked her to. The carrier had yet to decide which of those was the most important.

Even so, she already felt confident in her new abilities, unfounded though that may be. In her first combat analysis, she’d even managed to impress the great Fleet Admiral Red! She might have been born yesterday, but that just HAD to be an accomplishment in and of itself.

She approached her instructor with a relaxed smile, glad to see one familiar face in amongst this gathering.

“So… I’m here, I suppose. Just like you asked.”

She glanced over at the other shipgirls. Though the HUD in her eyes, Adrianna helpfully highlighted which were the seniors, and which were other Threes like her.

“All of those girls… they’re just like me?” She asked softly. “The Event got them too?”

Her hand, subconsciously, lifted to the gold chain around her neck. The small lump that resided just beneath, the round shape hidden under the fabric, would be unknown to all except the Titan.

Aegis shook her head, her reply equally soft. “Not all of them. Some of them already appeared years before the Event.”

A few had yet to arrive, so the Titan felt comfortable chatting with Tempest a bit more. “For the seniors here, this is more or less a refresher course. They’ll help you out as well.”

Just as she said that, Aegis saw a few more shipgirls enter. Most being the newer Threes and some being seniors. But seeing a certain pair of cruisers from yesterday enter brought a smile to Aegis’s face.

Of course they would join in as well. Lumi in particular had been on more missions than any other shipgirl post-manifestation, so her experience was unquestionable.

“Alright, everyone here?” the Titan asked across the holodeck. Receiving a chorus of replies, the Titan nodded.

“A very good morning to you all. I’m GDS Aegis, SCV-01, lead ship of the Aegis-class Titans. I’ll be your gunnery instructor for these sessions ahead. Those of us here who are seniors will be assisting the rest of you in training today.”

“Before we begin, I’d like to help clarify one thing. There’s a reason why we aren’t holding this training in open space, but here instead.”

Aegis paused before continuing. “One of our primary weapons, as you are aware, is an FTL kinetic weapon and the subject of these lessons. The risk of even low-powered shots flying off into open space and eventually hitting something are too great to ignore. In any case, the holodeck can simulate open space accurately and interface with our weapons for training mode, so you need not worry about the realism of these.”

“Mm…” Yellow mulled over what the man had said.

It ached her still-hurting heart to see the people here like that. If her quietly helping with odd jobs would improve things, then she was willing to undertake them.

Well, provided she didn’t face hostile monsters, at least. Rebels she could talk with or avoid. Monsters were a more different and difficult thing entirely.

She certainly did not need her cover of an ordinary do-gooder being blown by others somehow witnessing her feats of extremely augmented physical and mental capability, thank you very much.

“If even the smallest acts of kindness will make others feel better, then I’ll do it. For their sake.”

“Good to hear,” the man replied.  They wound up reaching the guild at this point, as the man opened up the door.  There were a great deal of Adventurers present in the guild, all equipped with a wide variety of gear.

The receptionist, who seemed to be a member of the Imperial Army given his Roman-inspired outfit, nodded to Yellow.  “Greetings,” he said.  “Welcome to the local Guild Hall.  You here to be an Adventurer?”
