GDS Tempest Eternal, Thanatos-class carrier.” She corrected, a little too boastfully.

“It’s nice to meet you, doctor.” She added. “What kind of laboratory is this?”

“Not just the station, no.” Lumi corrected by Hope’s side as she followed behind Aegis, the Titan leading the way to one of the turbolifts that would take them to the administrative tower.

“She’s also the commanding officer for us shipgirls. With how large our ranks have grown, administration apparently saw it fit to have us be our own separate branch.”

As the four of them got into said turbolift and it began ascending up the tower, Lumi continued. “We report to her, she reports to Fleet Admiral Red. But you’ll see Admiral Yoshino more often.”

The cruiser sisters turned then, admiring the view of Zephyr outside the turbolift’s transparent carapace. Even with the turbolift’s incredible transit speed, it still took almost a minute for it to arrive at its destination; a lobby with various security measures.

Two heavily armored Initiative soldiers flanked the door, which was clearly marked with the identity of its owner within. They nodded to the Titan and simply let her be. Akemi had clearly notified them of the visit Aegis had planned.

VICE ADMIRAL

Amane Yoshino

“Akemi, is Admiral Yoshino available?” Aegis inquired. The reply from her was quick.

“Yes, but you will have to wait a moment.”

“But we’re still part of the Navy, right? We have to keep that, at least!” She said, more to herself than anyone else though.

Her irritations aside, she was looking forward to meeting her new commanding officer. Her hand, without realising, lifted to gently brush against the timepiece around her neck.

“Of course we’ll still be a part of the Navy. We’ll always have that.” Lumi replied, now standing beside Hope instead of having her sister cling to her side.

The raven-haired cruiser straightened her uniform a little more, and Hope did the same with her own maid outfit.

It was then that Akemi appeared fully in her own teenage avatar. “The Admiral is ready to meet you and Tempest now, Aegis.”

As if on cue, the door slid aside. Promptly, Aegis led the carrier into Admiral Yoshino’s office.

And quite an office it was. The room itself was fairly sizable, and a significant portion of the wall appeared to be one huge window with a view.

Admiral Yoshino herself was waiting, of course, standing to greet Tempest and Aegis with a smile and nod. The woman had her black hair in the same style as Lumi’s, straight and back-length. Warm brown eyes met Tempest’s.

“Good afternoon, Aegis. And our new guest. Welcome to Starbase Zephyr, Tempest Eternal. I’m Vice Admiral Amane Yoshino. Akemi has been kind enough to inform me about you. And might I say, welcome back to the shores of life.”

Tempest Eternal smartly brought herself to a salute. She felt differently about this admiral; when she looked at the officer, she didn’t feel the same godly aura as when she first met Fleet Admiral Red. One could only assume it was because of the Vice Admiral’s slightly lower rank – still fully deserving of her wholehearted respect though.

“I wish I could say I was glad to be here, Ma’am.” Tempest answered coolly. “But that would not be entirely true, and I think you understand why.”

Admiral Yoshino nodded in understanding. “Of course.”

The woman laced her hands behind her back. “I won’t lie, it’s quite a rough time we’re going through. With what we’ve been hearing out there, the Initiative’s going to have to tread on eggshells.”

A sigh escaped Admiral Yoshino. “Though since CONCORD’s handling our duties for now, I suppose we could afford to ease off the activity. They’ve got even less mercy than we do for criminals, and that’s saying something.”

A shake of the head, and Admiral Yoshino looked back to the two before her. “But I digress. Anti-piracy operations are going to start in a few days, just in our universe for now, then the others once we’re done here. Intel indicates CONCORD may have sent some their forces here as well. There’s a high likelihood that you girls will be working alongside them.”

She held up a hand for emphasis. “Be advised, CONCORD takes their duties extremely seriously. They’d give Second Fleet a run for their money. I wouldn’t normally say this, but while you’re talking with them, keep it short and professional. I don’t mind the mild way things are here, but CONCORD definitely would.”

And here Admiral Yoshino couldn’t help but mutter under her breath at that last part, though Aegis heard it easily. “Pricks.”

“So, when dealing with these allies, you would prefer us to act more… professional?” She inquired, paying no heed to the muttered insult. “That shouldn’t be difficult, after all, there’s nothing I can’t do.” She added. Perhaps some of her boastful nature was showing through again, although this seemed different.

“I’ll show everyone just what Second Fleet is made of. I wasn’t a battlegroup flagship for nothing.”

“Precisely. And speaking of your Battlegroup, well…that’s the thing. They were caught in the Event as well, and we have no way of knowing if they even returned like you did.” Admiral Yoshino explained.

She returned behind her desk. “For all we know, you may be the only one out of all of them who’s come back. Shipgirls are tricky like that.”

A few taps on the desk’s holographic keyboard brought up a display of a large list. “All that aside, the new ships we’re supposed to help test out and teach will be ready soon. Honestly, I haven’t got much to say about these operations than what you’ve probably already heard from Aegis.”

“Just…be safe out there, you two.” Yoshino said, her tone clearly concerned, but especially for Tempest.

There was another pang of guilt. The only survivor of her whole Battlegroup?

“It’ll be nice to get back out there and do something useful.” She murmured. “You don’t need to worry about us, Ma’am, we’ll be fine.”

“I’ll take your word for it, then.” Admiral Yoshino replied, nodding. “Before you go, Tempest, one thing. Aegis will be helping to teach gunnery for the new returnees over the next few days, and I recommend you attend.”

Aegis stood even straighter than before as Admiral Yoshino continued to talk to the carrier about the training exercises. “Information on this and other important activities will be uploaded to your omni-tool or haptic pod. If you don’t have either one at the moment, any replicator can fabricate them for you.”

The admiral exhaled. “Well, that is all.”

As the Vice Admiral finished speaking, Aegis mentally reviewed the relevant data on the scheduled training that she could send over to Adrianna for her to remind Tempest.

Onboard Yumi, Wolf dragged the chained and bound Drake Czar into the bridge.

“The GDI will be so happy to turn you into nothingness.” He said, the former Brotherhood/Hand general sneering in response. Spitting in the cyborg’s face, Wolf looked to Captain Omar Claw. Claw looked back at him, awaiting his signal. Wolf nodded, and the captain raised a hand.

“All personnel, prepare for Transdimensional Jump. We follow behind the Sumeragi!” Claw shouted, “Bring us about and move towards Sector Zulu-Alpha-Omega!”

The code for the TD Gate. With this gate restored, again Bouzacula would be flooded with trade. Again, they would be able to participate in the politics of the Coalition… Again, they could fight for the greater good.

Surprisingly, not much awaited them on the other side.

The Sumeragi emerged from the Initiative-side TD Gate in a system of one of the inner worlds, meeting a small Battlegroup of only a few cruisers and frigates. The Bouzac dreadnought emerged shortly thereafter.

“Transit complete, preparing handover to Battlegroup August.” Noriega reported. Captain Thompson then opened a channel to Yumi.

“Gentlemen and ladies, this is where we part ways. It’s truly been an honor assisting you. Battlegroup August will take care of the prisoner and negotiations. Sumeragi out.”

Examine: Bokoblins, a race of goblins who share the planet of Tryva with the Bouzac. They come in several different colors, signifying both physical strength and mental aptitude. Red Bokoblins, of course, are the weakest and are dumber then rocks, while Silver and Gold Bokoblins are the strongest and are very intelligent for their race. They live in close knit tribal groups. Bokoblin Warchiefs can be any color, and as such, are generally the smartest and/or strongest of their color.

This stratification of capability along differing genetic lines isn’t uncommon, being also found in several other races. These goblins would make for excellent examples in cultural studies.

BEA fighters danced with pirate interceptors, while BEA Bombers began attack runs on the pirate cruisers. It wasn’t long before 3 Rathian-class Star Destroyers came out of hyperspace, opening fire on the cruisers.

“Keep those damn pirates off the GDI’s back!” Wolf growled into the comlink in his fighter’s cockpit, firing a proton torpedo straight into the bridge of one of the enemy cruisers.

“And if it was their design, sir, it’s a sloppy one.” Noriega replied, appearing on Yumi’s bridge and gesturing to the side as a display filled with the weapon’s scan data appeared.

“It’s a powerful gun alright, but while it’s projectile does appear to have some form of shield-disrupting properties, it’s still a sublight round that drains a lot of power to fire. Relativistic maneuvers should make it trivial to evade those.”

Captain Thompson chipped in with a thought that had just occurred to him. “Hold that thought, Noriega. Something’s off. Pirates shouldn’t be capable of building dreadnoughts at all, they don’t have the resources. Much less one with a railgun like that. Someone or something has their back. And I don’t like the sound of that.”

Yumi’s face appeared on a viewscreen.

“The people who built that dreadnought are those same ones who want to keep us separated and weak.”

Yumi brought up a holographic projection of the Arach leader.

“The Arachs.” She said, “They live in the Arachnoid Cluster just north of Bouzaculan Space. They’re considered a subspecies of the Harch, a species well known to the Republic. They are known for a few things: they provided the Scorpion’s Hand with funding, and now they are providing war droids and ships to the pirates, drug cartels, and slavers who were allowed to roam free during the Hand’s reign.”

Yumi sighed.

“A few months ago, a BEA task force found a Cartel drug cache, and the Cartel had a Arach Spider Droid Tank defending it alongside their own foot soldiers.” She said, “The Arachs want nothing more then to end our reign over our empire… and isolate us so they can exploit our resources without outside interference.”

Thompson sighed. “And right now, GDI doesn’t have the political will to take action against them. CONCORD might handle them once they hear of this, but they’re just as ruthless as us on organized crime.”

News had circled around that CONCORD had recently modernized its fleets, bringing far more formidable vessels to the field.

“We’ll work on fortifying this area. Sumeragi out.”

———

Fortunately for them, the next few hours passed without any hostiles approaching. By then, Aegis had begun to awaken, and as she sat up in the bed yawning, memories came back of her sleep-deprived rant during combat from earlier.

“Oh no…” Aegis softly whispered as she hugged her bolster close out of embarrassment.

Not for long, though. Knowing she had to get back to business soon, Aegis freshened herself up with a quick hydrosonic shower, then headed to the CIC.

“Aegis, reporting.”

“They’re less then reliable on this then.” Yumi said, “We won’t allow anyone who doesn’t adhere to a certain code of conduct into here. Not my call.”

—————————————————————————

Wolf had landed in Yumi’s hanger by that time, the extended time flying around the Sumeragi had left him somewhat tired. Moving to the bridge, Wolf looked over the officers as they went about their work, then to the captain.

“Status report.” Wolf said.

“All’s quiet.” the captain said.

“Usually I would say that’s a bad thing, but right now, that’s good.” He said.

“First phase of initial repair plan’s complete, Captain,” Noriega reported. “We’ve set up a base of operations in the Gate’s primary node. Component fabrication is underway, and Gate system protocols are being developed.”

“Good work so far.” Captain Thompson acknowledged. He’d overseen the ongoing expansion of the defense network surrounding the Gate throughout the past few hours, seeing it grow from 10 stations to 60. But even that was only very light defenses by Initiative standards.

Any Gate’s defense network usually had more than 8 times that number.

Aegis’s voice brought his attention back. “Captain. I…I must apologize.”

Thompson looked at the Titan who had just entered, looking refreshed and well-rested. “Apologize for what?”

Aegis shifted almost imperceptibly, her salute brief. “For my conduct unbecoming of a member of the Initiative Navy earlier.”

Captain Thompson gestured for her to relax. “At ease, Aegis. You were still tired at the time, sleep deprivation tends to mess people up. That aside, if you’re rested enough, I have a specific duty in mind.”

A swipe of the hand brought up a display of the Gate and its surrounding space. “There’s no guarantee that the enemy dreadnought you destroyed was the only one they had. We may have a defense network set up, but for all we know there could be thousands more of those dreadnoughts just waiting out there.”

Captain Thompson’s tone now became clear and decisive.

“Aegis, defend this Gate.”

Aegis saluted and nodded. “Yes, sir.”

A hologram of Wolf was projected into the room.

“I’ve got some new info for you.” He said, “The BEA intends to build two space stations armed withe 800 mm Blood and Iron Railguns to aid in the defense of the Gate, as well as leave several beacons that will inform us on whether or not friend or foe are approaching.”

Two months passed, fortunately without incident. The repairs had progressed completely enough to the point that the Gate could handle the re-establishing of onboard defenses on its own.

The defense network had also grown, and now even an entire fleet of only dreadnoughts wasn’t enough to break through to the Gate. Aegis had already gone back only a week ago.

On the Sumeragi, Captain Thompson looked at the display of the TD Gate. Compared to the lifeless wreck two months ago, it was now vibrant and functional again. The crew had already had their celebrations the previous ship-night, and now it was time to call back.

“Sending preliminary signals,” Noriega said as she handled the intricacies of TD Gate operation. “Signals received, handshake protocols acknowledged. Security checks out. Gate is activating.”

And in the middle of the monolithic structure, light grew. A large and familiar wormhole formed.

“TD Connection restored and stable. Ready for transit.” Noriega reported.
