“Well, technically they’re all the leaders, really.” Aegis explained. “It’s just that the Commanding Fleet Admiral would be the face of the whole Admiralty.”

And besides, Aegis thought to herself, this depended on whether or not Yellow would even accept the honor in the first place. She had always stood by the sidelines, focusing on her and Fourth Fleet’s humanitarian work.

“And even then, Astrid…I don’t know if she’d accept the title. All this time after the Event, Yellow’s been quiet. No statements, no public appearances…do you think she was actually planning her departure?” Aegis speculated.

“Might be possible,” Astrid replied.  “But if that is the case, I’ll be sure to find her and talk sense into her.  No reason for her to run away when you guys need her most, after all.”

“If she’s even coming here at all. Admiral Yellow could be literally anywhere in the galaxy right now and we wouldn’t know.” Aegis felt inclined to point out.

The Titan truly hoped Yellow would indeed make her way to this planet. At least it would eliminate the need for a search, despite the fact that Yellow had managed to have her subordinate Vice Admiral take over her duties and place a successful request for shore leave without administrative AIs noticing anything amiss.

And speaking of this planet…

“I think I’ll start heading back to the Initiative. But…before I go, Astrid, since you said that some ‘reboot’ had happened, what’s your world called now?”

BEA fighters danced with pirate interceptors, while BEA Bombers began attack runs on the pirate cruisers. It wasn’t long before 3 Rathian-class Star Destroyers came out of hyperspace, opening fire on the cruisers.

“Keep those damn pirates off the GDI’s back!” Wolf growled into the comlink in his fighter’s cockpit, firing a proton torpedo straight into the bridge of one of the enemy cruisers.

Aboard the Sumeragi, things were getting more busy. Repair drones flew out from their storage bays by the dozens, while the engineering personnel prepared heavy-duty industrial rigs and other associated gear within the cavernous deployment bays.

In the CIC, Captain Thompson observed the readouts on both his command interface and the displays before him as Noriega reported more information.

“Replicators are go, foundries are go. Primary landing point identified. T-minus 10 minutes to operation start.”

The AI turned to him. “Captain, those pirates are still engaging Bouzac forces. Recommend we move to assist.”

Captain Thompson shook his head. “Negative on that, we’re remaining at Yellow Alert. Let our allies take care of them, our mission is to focus on repairing the Gate.”

Noriega simply nodded. “Alright, sir. Command base is ready and on standby in the construction queue. Crew are making final preparations for operation.”

“And how’s Aegis doing?”

The AI checked one of her data feeds. “Still sleeping in her guest quarters. Shall I wake her?”

Again, Thompson shook his head. “No, let her rest as much as she needs.”

GDS Tempest Eternal, Thanatos-class carrier.” She corrected, a little too boastfully.

“It’s nice to meet you, doctor.” She added. “What kind of laboratory is this?”

As one of the corvette’s doors slid open and a figure stepped out, Hope’s happy expression grew so bright it looked like it could power the whole Starbase for a year.

The young woman that had emerged had an extremely similar figure and appearance to Hope, save the raven-black color of her hair. And who was now looking at the two behind Hope with surprise.

“Lumi!”

And before anyone else could say anything, Hope practically leapt with joy towards the woman she knew as her sister ship, hugging her before pulling the other into a deep kiss.

Aegis chuckled at the sight. One could trust Hope to always be so open with her affections.

GDS Tempest Eternal, Thanatos-class carrier.” She corrected, a little too boastfully.

“It’s nice to meet you, doctor.” She added. “What kind of laboratory is this?”

“We all will.” Aegis affirmed with a nod.

After a moment more of simply sitting by the seats, Aegis made a motion to get up. Despite the CIC’s strategic value, there honestly wasn’t much to see aside from what had already been shown.

“Come on, shuttle bays next. That’s one of the options to take if you want to go anywhere within and beyond our space.”

A few shipgirls even made regular usage of the shuttles and transports on the Starbase, Lumi being one of them. Aegis knew that cruiser had a particular corvette she liked to use.

Looking back at Tempest, Aegis patiently waited. “Ready to go if you are.”

Tempest was instantly by her side once more. “Of course.” She agreed. “Whatever you want.”

She was a little excited to get to the shuttle bay. Perhaps she could sneak out the doors and spend some more time outside too, but that was just a dream.

Seeing that Tempest really seemed eager to see the shuttle bay, Aegis obliged.

This time, the trip there back out the defensive corridors involved a ride on one of the Starbase’s maglev trams. A speedy journey, if one discounted the various transient security measures.

The shuttle bay, as it turned out, was one of six such docking areas used for both passengers and logistical goods, and was easily one of the largest areas imaginable.

Transports and other small craft steadily made their way in and out of the shuttle bay’s energy-shielded entrances.

And nearby…well, this was interesting. Aegis squinted at one of the incoming ships, a corvette. She knew that one.

And at the landing area just a few meters away…someone else she knew rather well.

At first glance, one may have mistaken the young woman waiting at the landing area for an English maid. But clearly Aegis knew her to be more than what she appeared.

As Tempest trailed behind her, Aegis went over to the young lady and called out to her.

“Hope! Waiting for a certain someone?”

Whatever that girl was wearing, it was certainly not a uniform. Even if it did look nice, she might have one replicated later…

“Say, is that the one you were talking about before?” She asked the Titan quietly, as she followed.

Given what she’d learned of the weirdness of this place, it wouldn’t be hard to figure out the other was a shipgirl. The thought was still puzzling, if not for that trademark eccentricity that all shipgirls seemed to show, she’d have no other way of telling them apart from other humans.

“Yes, she is.” Aegis subtly replied, as Hope turned around and gasped.

From the front, Hope’s maid outfit was just as eye-catching, with the Initiative emblem clearly marked on her left, just below the outfit’s neckline.

“Aegis! Nice to see you here! And yes, I am.”

As the corvette began its landing procedures, Hope looked to Tempest and smiled brightly with a wave. “And hello! I haven’t seen you around before. It’s nice to meet you!”

“GDS Tempest Eternal, Thanatos-class carrier.” She introduced. “Nice to meet you. That’s a nice outfit you have there, is it standard issue now?” She joked lightheartedly.

Hope curtsied, incidentally drawing one’s gaze to her prominent cleavage. “Glad to make your acquaintance, Tempest. GDS Hope Eternal, Advent-class cruiser. Just call me Hope.”

She returned to her usual stance, aware that Aegis had just narrowly averted her eyes from the cruiser’s chest. Hope giggled as she then ran with Tempest’s joke.

“And thanks, but it’s not really standard, much as I would wish~! It’s what I was wearing when I manifested like this.”

As the corvette she had been watching landed with a gust of displaced air, Hope directed her attention to the small craft, beaming eagerly.

Beside Tempest, Aegis couldn’t help but smile with amusement. If she was guessing right on who was in that corvette, then Tempest was about to find out why Hope had a famous penchant for sunny displays of affection.

Wolf’s eyes widened at the sound of the events that had occurred.

“Oh… Okay…. I’m just going to say… While what happened wasn’t undeserved… I believe you’ve suffered too much.” Wolf said, “If this had been told to me five years ago… I would’ve been a lot harsher in my judgement… But by the sounds of it, you guys sound like you’re about to implode.”

Wolf looked to her.

“Aegis… If Red sent you here to check out how things were going… I hope this isn’t overstepping any boundaries by saying this, but it almost sounds like a cry for help.” He said, “Don’t worry about the TD Gate on your end. I got one on mine, or at least, the ruins of it. If what my scientists are saying are correct, it’s still reading the frequency of your dimension, it’s just getting onto the Gate to repair that’s the issue. Seems not all the demons went back, as there’s one at the gate.”

Wolf put a hand on her shoulder.

“I need you to do something for me, Aegis…” He said, “when you get back to Altia, go straight to your father. Tell him that old war dogs never break their bonds. He’ll know what that means. I need to get in touch with Astrid.”

Noriega looked apologetic, the AI bowing her head. “I’m sorry, sir. Aegis specifically requested no visitors. But I can say that she is currently sleeping in one of the guest quarters on Deck 5.”

A gesture beside herself, and a 3D map of the Sumeragi’s layout appeared, a route being highlighted to that particular quarters.

“If you wish to travel there, you may, but be aware that Aegis has engaged the privacy lock in her quarters, so you won’t be able to enter.”

Noriega laced her hands behind her back. “I can, however, help you to leave messages for her when she awakens.”

“No.” Wolf said, “I’ll talk to her when she’s ready.”

Turning around, he walked back aboard his shuttle, when he got a message from aboard Yumi.

“Sir, several signatures coming out of hyperspace, Carrion-class cruisers.” The comms person said.

“Goddamn pirates…” Wolf said, then switching the channel to that off the GDI’s, “We’ve got pirates incoming. They more then then likely have orders to try to keep the Bouzac separated from the Coalition. We’ll deal with them, you keep working on the Gate.”

“Copy that. Going to Yellow Alert,” Came the reply.

Immediately, the PA rang with the chime of an alarm, along with a calm, automated voice. “All hands, Yellow Alert. Shields raised. Repeat, Yellow Alert…”

Out in space, the Sumeragi began approaching the ruins of the Gate, starting to deploy several repair craft and engineer teams.

The Carrion-class cruisers came out of hyperspace, opening fire on the Wolfsclaw-class dreadnought within mere moments. Wolf growled as he came aboard his ship.

“Did you call for the rest of the fleet?” Wolf asked the captain of the ship.

“As soon as we got the signal, we sent a message. They’re sending three star destroyers.” The captain said. Yumi’s turbolasers opened fire on the pirate cruisers.

“Dad, you need your fighter?” Yumi asked, appearing on a viewscreen.

“Yes, sweetheart, get my fighter ready.” Wolf nodded.

While the Bouzac were engaging the pirate forces, Aegis remained fast asleep in the guest quarters she’d been given on the Sumeragi.

A few missed shots from the pirate cruisers hit the first layer of the support vessel’s shields, barely dropping its integrity by a few percentage points before it regenerated back to full.

Barely a tremor passed through the ship, and Aegis merely mumbled in her sleep and hugged her bolster closer.

A few decks deeper within the ship’s CIC, Captain Andrew Thompson was more focused on other matters. “Noriega, status on the Gate.”

The AI’s reply was succinct as she took in the data from the Sumeragi’s sensors. “As expected, the Gate is a near-total wreck. Vital systems and components are all completely beyond repair, as per self-destruct protocols.”

“Show me.”

In response, a full display of the ruined Gate appeared before Thompson. He grunted as he glanced at the angry orange glow of the now-gone components. “We’ll need to manufacture the new parts and systems on-site, then. And we’re the only GDI ship around. Just great. Any estimate on repair times?”

Noriega’s reply was tinged with concern. “With just us? Two months, three if we want to restore all the automated defenses. Are you sure we can’t ask Aegis to make trips back for more support?”

Captain Thompson shook his head. “Not if it tires Aegis this badly with every trip. We’re on our own until the Gate’s back up to minimum functionality. Did the trip damage anything aboard?”

Noriega’s avatar appeared, folding her arms. “Fortunately, no. All industrial replicators and foundries are at status green. But it’s a lot of work ahead of us. Engineer teams are reporting heavy damage to the Gate interiors. We’re lucky it’s even holding together at all.”

Captain Thompson sighed before opening the Sumeragi’s general channel. “Best we get started, then. All hands, this is Captain Thompson. We’re beginning repair operations in T-minus 30 minutes. Ready all industrial rigs for deployment. Let’s get this done. Thompson out.”

“Expedient option, huh…” Aegis echoed as she thought over what Astrid had said.

While the enaction of Juno Protocol years ago had achieved the goal of neutralizing the Jarellians and their ‘’deity’, it had drawn criticism from certain military officials and ethics groups.

But that was a long-quelled argument. By now knowledge of them was strictly academic and historical. Expedient? Certainly with the benefits of hindsight it had been an excessive decision.

“Thinking on this too long is going to get us nowhere,” Aegis sighed as she rubbed her temples.

“All that aside…there’s talk among the Admiralty right now as we speak for a consideration to change who will be Commanding Fleet Admiral. Father has held that position for decades, and with everything we’ve done so far it’s likely a shift will do us better.”

The Titan listened in on the discussion, a separated dimension and thousands of light years away.

“So far…the general consensus is that…if or when she returns, it’s going to be Admiral Yellow.”

“I’d certainly appreciate that one,” Bellatrix commented.  “Yellow’s the one who reminds me the most of Astrid, and that’s already something good in my books.”

Astrid smiled.  It was nice to see that they were considering Yellow to be in charge, though she felt a bit bad that Red was going to lose his title.  At the same time, if Yellow was in charge, it was likely that the GDI would engage in far more peaceful solutions to problems, which always had Astrid’s personal stamp of approval.

“I think that’s a good choice,” Astrid mentioned.  “Yellow feels like the best option to be your leader if it’s not gonna be Red.”

“Well, technically they’re all the leaders, really.” Aegis explained. “It’s just that the Commanding Fleet Admiral would be the face of the whole Admiralty.”

Aegis drained the last of her flask of water, then had it recycled with her field replicator in a shimmer of light as she rose from her seat.

“I have to get going, start the process up. I will see you soon, Wolf.”

“See you soon.” Wolf said, downing his drink, and leaving. He had other things to do.

——————————————-

After dealing with the demon with Astrid’s help, Wolf had started to begin the recovery of the TD Gate. He knew nothing could be done to reconstruct the Gate until the GDI engineers came. Standing in the bridge of the Wolfsclaw-Class Dreadnaught, he watched as squadrons of fighters and squads of troops in space gear patrolled the ruins.

Gravity and electromagnetic readings on every sensor array went off the charts as space twisted and light flared in an area of space near the Gate.

A wormhole. Not just any wormhole, but the type that a TD Gate formed when connecting between universes. But this one seemed to flicker, clearly unstable.

If one could see past the glare and gravitic distortion, they would have seen a single tiny figure emerge from the blinding breach.

Meanwhile, Aegis gritted her teeth, clearly straining as she flew off to the side of the wormhole and held out a hand. The miniature Gate rig she carried had nowhere near the stabilization capability of a full TD Gate, and each transition with it took every bit of concentration and energy she had for a single crossing.

Soon after, a large, sleek vessel emerged, of Initiative design. An Endurance-class support vessel, GDS Sumeragi.

Once the starship made it through, the wormhole closed. Out in space, Aegis let out a breath, exhausted as she made for the nearest of the Sumeragi’s hanger bays to rest.

Wolf’s dreadnought was hailed as the Sumeragi came to a stop near the ruins of the TD Gate. “Bouzaculan vessel, this is the GDS Sumeragi. We are ready to begin repair procedures.”

“GDS Sumeragi, this is BEN Yumi, your clearance checks out. Preparing evac protocols to clear the way for you, and sending a fighter escort.” Wolf responded on the comms. Wolf looked to one of the officers.

“Get all men off of that TD Gate, and prepare me a shuttle.” Wolf said, clearly concerned for Aegis. The officer nodded, sending out the signal. Soon, several Falcon-980 troop carriers were sent out, collecting the men. On the other hand, a Dragon-class shuttle was sent to the Sumeragi, with the BEA’s commander-in-chief aboard it.

“GDS Sumeragi, this is Shuttle Wyvern, permission to board?” the pilot asked, Wolf looking on from behind the pilot.

“Permission granted, Shuttle Wyvern. Proceed to Bay 03. Navpoint transmitted.” Came the reply.

On the pilot’s view, one of the various shuttle bays on the Sumeragi opened up, a virtual guide path being projected.

Once the shuttle had landed aboard and Wolf had stepped out, he was greeted by the Sumeragi’s AI, an attractive woman.

“Greetings, sir. I’m Noriega, ship AI. How can I help you?” she inquired politely.
