Yellow kept her silence for the moment, wanting to observe how such a spell would appear before trying it herself.

Of course, there was always the possibility of her being picked out for a demonstration anyway, so she was prepared for that as well.

In any case, a ward spell was relatively simple based on what she’d read thus far. A defensive barrier, either uniplanar or spherical, used as an active defense. Nothing too fancy.

One of the students, an elven woman by the looks of things, raised her hand.  After being called down to the floor, the professor declared, “It’s always important to be cautious, especially when Adventuring, and Ward spells may save your life at some point.  To that end, I’m going to cast a very weak offensive spell at you, and you’re going to block it with a ward.  Are you ready?”

The elf nodded and thrust her arm out, a barrier flinging up between her and the professor.  A very minor spark of electricity zapped out and dissipated against the ward.  “Good, it seems that you have some understanding of the spell already.”

Having seen how a Ward spell was cast, Yellow noted it down mentally.

A small gesture, enough to satisfy the somatic motion requirement of most Arcane spells. The magical barrier appeared to be brief, looking similar to her Valkyrie suit’s personal shields.

With that, the healer nodded to herself. This she could handle.

“Well, there is one thing…” Lumi began, having been struck by an idle spark of curiosity. Hope looked to her sister in mild surprise, listening quietly.

“Have you…met other deities, or beings like them, not of Terra Ancora before?”

Upon self-reflection, how could she not ask, really? Knowledge of beings like the Organians and the Q had been around for decades at this point. Surely they and the deities here had crossed paths or heard of each other at some point.

“Not from Terra Ancora, you say? No, I don’t believe I have,” Ilta mentioned.  “I was created by Lady Astrid to be her assistant.  I am even younger than she is, and I haven’t exactly had the opportunity to leave Terra Ancora yet.”

“Mm, I…I see.” Lumi murmured after hearing that. So Ilta was really young, younger than herself even, if one went by her original ship-self’s launch date.

A small squeak by Lumi’s side as Hope raised a hand. Lumi wondered what her sister wanted to ask, and so fell silent.

Hope blushed in mild embarrassment as she looked at the angel. “Well, since Astrid created you, Lady Ilta…do you, um…do you see her as your mom?”

WE NEED TO KEEP TALKING ABOUT ARTICLE 13

Here’s a quick rundown.

  • Article 13 is still in its final stages of voting. The problem is not that people don’t want to protect copyright, it’s that the LANGUAGE of the LAW is TOO VAGUE and OPEN TO ABUSE. IT COULD PASS THIS YEAR.
  • This law WILL impact EVERYBODY. Media platforms like YouTube will not bother to have different policies for the EU and for everybody else, they’ll just apply strict EU laws to EVERYONE.
  • MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS. You can yammer on all day about how people shouldn’t be building a career on an industry like YouTube or Instagram anyway, but the world changes, and there is actually not much different between YouTube content creators and traditional media like movies and TV. Youtubers, Instagram models, hell, even kids who use apps like TikTok are either directly or indirectly CREATING JOBS, and you CANNOT deny that. ALL OF THESE JOBS WILL BE PUT IN JEOPARDY IF ARTICLE 13 IS PUT INTO PLAY. THE ONLY CONTENT CREATORS THAT WILL BE ABLE TO THRIVE POST ARTICLE 13 IS BIG MEDIA COMPANIES.
  • THIS IS NOT FEARMONGERING. Is it scary, even anxiety-inducing that Article 13 could take away the only safe space that some people have—the Internet? YES. But we CANNOT close our eyes and scroll past all the article 13 posts because they make us anxious, or because they make us sad. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Reblog/make posts. Spread awareness. Tell your friends. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, IF YOU LIVE IN THE EU, TALK TO YOUR REPS. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO SAVE OUR INTERNET.

We’re currently going through a scare on Tumblr where your blog could get taken down at any time for any unclear reason, because they’re cracking down on child porn. That is good, but many people with perfectly appropriate blogs are having them taken down, too. The thing is, right now, you can still get your blog back without hassle if it is taken down by mistake. Imagine if your blog was taken down simply for making or reblogging a meme, gif of your favorite TV show, or simply producing art that isn’t 100% original, and Tumblr COULD NOT RESTORE IT BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS BY ARTICLE 13. That could be our reality. Do NOT turn a blind eye to this.

tl;dr Article 13 will 100% change the internet as we know it for the worse, and you aren’t safe even outside of the EU. SPREAD THE WORD. EU RESIDENTS CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES.

I know you guys love to shit on MatPat here, but he made a wonderful and interesting video going into more detail.

https://youtu.be/GbXHrj8k7dg

Spread it. Spread this post. Make your own and spread it. Do SOMETHING. Silence and inaction will only help kill the internet we all love so much.

Commencing tightbeam transmission. Those of us who can voice out, do your duty.

“Not looking a gift horse in the mouth…I can get that.” Lumi said after some thought.

Eventually she shrugged as well. “Oh well. Thanks for sharing all this, Lady Ilta. You’ve given us a lot of perspective.”

Not that they could really deal with such an issue even if they did know all this. Shipgirls she and Hope were, but deities they were definitely not.

“It’s no trouble at all,” Ilta replied.  “It is my duty to advise Lady Astrid on matters both celestial and political.  So it’s not uncommon for me to mention things like these.  Is there anything else you’d like to talk about?”

“Well, there is one thing…” Lumi began, having been struck by an idle spark of curiosity. Hope looked to her sister in mild surprise, listening quietly.

A nod from Yellow as she looked up from the book. “Yes, I’m new as well. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Even with everything I’ve read…”

She took a breath, trying to squish down her worry. All of her books had warned, repeatedly, that Arcane Magic was the epitome of a double-edged sword.

“We’ll have to be cautious, then, won’t we?” the healer said, more to herself than anyone else.

The student nodded.  “Just do things by the book for now and things should work out, yeah?” he replied, before giving a thumbs-up towards Yellow.

Shortly thereafter, the professor, an elderly-looking mage in a simple suit and tie entered the room.  “Students, apologies for the delay, I got caught up in some other matters on my way here,” he declared.  He walked over towards the center of the room and stated, “So, this is your first practical lesson in defensive and healing magics.  I’ll admit, since the discovery of Holy Magic enrollment has dropped considerably.

“Now then, studying the theoretical side of magic is all well and good, but it is only through practical application that you will be capable of employing it to the fullest.  To that end, we’re going to start with a basic ward spell.  Is anyone willing to volunteer for this procedure before we move into the next stage?”

Yellow kept her silence for the moment, wanting to observe how such a spell would appear before trying it herself.

Of course, there was always the possibility of her being picked out for a demonstration anyway, so she was prepared for that as well.

Any story claiming to be a deconstruction of fairy tales but has nothing to offer except new types of violence, more explicit sex, and a general attitude of “lol happy endings aren’t real” is like. such a cultural waste of time tbh

know what actually is a good deconstruction of a fairy tale? Shrek. It fucks up just about everything in a normal fairy tale and still manages to have a happy ending with a good message and never once has to be ‘gritty’ or ‘dark’. It’s actually really well done.

“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.”

Lumi had heard that as she’d searched for another book, of course, and when she returned she couldn’t help but voice her ponderings.

“If that’s true, then I wonder why. Surely they aren’t twiddling their thumbs just watching her.”

With a new book on Ancoran deities in hand, Lumi sat down beside Hope once more, her sister having quietly picked up her novel where she’d left off.

“I confess that I do not know the Council’s motives for ignoring Astrid.  I do not work for the Council, so I can only make guesses as to their actions.”  Ilta shrugged.  “Personally, I do not feel it a bad thing that they continue to grant levity towards Astrid.  It gives us a great deal of time to aid our followers as needed.”

“Not looking a gift horse in the mouth…I can get that.” Lumi said after some thought.

Reading is Fundamental

(Closed starter for @saviorgoddessastrid .)

It had been only a few weeks since her entry into the Mage’s Guild. Yellow had delved deep into her borrowed tomes on Arcane Magic and even begun an additional online course (running on her neural interface), but thus far she’d only been studying the academic side of the Arcane.

Today would mark her first practical session. Entering the lecture hall and finding a few students already seated within, Yellow took a seat amongst the middle rows.

Seeing as the professor had yet to arrive, the healer began idly reading one of her books on Arcane Magic, hoping to pass the time.

One of the students, a human by the looks of things, approached Yellow.  “Hey, you’re new here too, right?” he asked.  “Have to admit, I’m a little nervous about our practical sessions.  You know how dangerous working with magic can be, right?”
