DM (to our bard): The six cultists shove you to the ground, bow to the massive green dragon, and say, “Oh Great One, we have brought you this gold and this human sacrifice as tribute to your greatness. Please accept our offering.”
Rest of Party, looking on from a distance: Shit. He’s dead. He’s so dead. RIP Edward.
DM: The dragon thanks the cultists and asks if you have any last words.
Bard: I look up at the dragon and say, “I have brought you this gold and these six cultists as tribute to your greatness.”
Rest of Party: OH SHIT!
DM, who was clearly not expecting that: …………roll persuasion.
Bard: 17.
DM: The dragon says, “I like you. Duck.”
Bard: ….I duck?
DM: The dragon incinerates the cultists with his poison breath and leaves you alive, flying off with his treasure.
Bard: Oh my god. I thought I was dead.
DM: Honestly? So did I.
Beautiful
Invasion of Hell [Closed RP]
A quick burst transmission from the still-recovering Red was all Admiral Green needed to appear from one of the portals with a small hop.
Clad in full armor and casting an imposing figure in the sepulchral light of Hell, Green took a second to sync his frequency to the party’s.
“Fleet Admiral Green, Second Fleet. Reporting to reinforce as requested.”
A rather large blast rifle was stowed on his back, but that wasn’t what drew most peoples’ attentions. What did was the massive war hammer, nearly as tall as he was, that Green seemed to carry effortlessly.
He could even do so one-handed.
Green cast a look to the nearest fort ahead as Red spoke up across the shared frequency. “Ruler and I will hang back and defend this fort we captured for now. Green, advance with them. And do feel free to let loose with that hammer.”
Behind his helmet’s thickly armored faceplate, Green had an icy, humorless smile upon hearing those last words. “Of course, Red. Moving out now.”
Red spoke up again, addressing the Templar forces. “Templar allies, be advised. Avoid being in the path of Green’s hammer. The gravitic shockwaves alone will easily wreck even battlesuit armor.”
Happy New Year!
PTSD is your brain trying to make sure you DON’T DIE.
Humans are really good at adapting so that we don’t die. That’s kind of our whole *THING*. We adapt.
If something BAD and SCARY and DANGEROUS happens, your brain tries to teach you to react better next time. If the Bad Scary Dangerous thing happens a lot, that’s reinforcing it. With CPTSD, the Bad Scary Dangerous thing happened often enough and frequently enough that your whole psyche developed around it.
You learn to notice the tiny things that signal the Bad Scary Dangerous Thing might happen – even if you don’t consciously know that you know that – so that you are braced to react and defend yourself. They become triggers so that you are primed to respond.
Hypervigilance? Better to panic unnecessarily than to get dead because you didn’t recognize a threat in time, right? It’s uncomfortable and a waste of energy but you’re not dead.
Nightmares about the Bad Thing? Dreams are PRACTICE. You are trying to learn how to react better or faster or more effectively next time.
Avoidance? Dissociating is better than just completely breaking and shutting down entirely.
The thing is, even if you are not in that situation anymore, your brain did not get the memo. It is trying! But it takes a lot of work to convince it that “No really, it is safe now!”
I guess what I’m saying is cut yourself some slack. You are doing your best and you’re not dead. ❤
Also as a therapist pointed out to me your coping mechanisms are coping mechanisms because at one point in your life they worked.
If they are now interfering with you having good quality of life it’s because they don’t fit your current situation not that they are “bad” or “wrong”
At one time they were right, your situation has just changed and now they don’t fit.
Which means at times if you are in a situation where they are appropriate again it’s okay to use them.
As a therapist in training… YES TO ALL THIS
one of my adhd hyperfixations is just…knowledge in general? I like knowing things and sharing them with people. I never mean it in a condescending way, I just like explaining stuff to others bc it refreshes my memory and sharing knowledge is my jam?? I also love knowing random facts
i do this too!! And it makes a lot of sense considering that lots of adhd ppl can have a hard time having just one hobby or one thing they’re into (or when they do have 1 thing they find it hard to stay interested for an extended period), while they are pretty smart and think super fast. So having ‘knowing stuff about a wide range of topics or knowing stuff thats specific and intense’ as a hobby makes a lot of sense, cuz its never boring.
