Ruler (Jeanne d’Arc/Joan of Arc)

A French military leader and a Christian Saint, Joan of Arc was born to a pair of peasants working a farm in rural France. 

When King Henry V invaded the country and took the throne from Charles VI, only to die a few years later, the French people sought to place the son of the previous French ruler upon it. 

At this time, Joan began having visions sent by God telling her she was the saviour of France and she should help Charles VII expel the English from the country. She dressed herself as a man and at only 18 years old, led her army to victory at the Battle of Orleans.

The English believed her to be a supporter of witchcraft and a heretic and so she was burned at the stake. Even as she lay burning, she did not relinquish her faith in God.

Over 500 years later, she would be canonized as a Saint.
