“We shall see, Astrid,” came the distant-minded reply of the hypermind. “We shall see.”

Her multitude of avatars pulled back from the minds of her worshippers. High above the galactic plane, Serina reappeared in another avatar.

In her earlier years, she would have sighed. Now she simply gazed at the vast expanse of the Milky Way. “Baselines…so chaotic to deal with. I must prepare some more contingencies.”

Astrid teleported over the Milky Way with Serina.  “It’s a lovely view of the galaxy we have, don’t we?” she mentioned.  “As long as you can keep an eye on your followers, I’m sure things will work out.”

“In these uncertain times, one can’t be too sure.” Serina idly waved a hand, attention increasing ever so slightly on the Initiative’s data channels.

“This faith is new, eager…and word of it will reach the Assembly. If it hasn’t already. And that will be difficult enough to explain without these followers jumping in.”

Serina folded her avatar’s arms. “I cannot guarantee that they will not try to build some accursed monument in my honor. What is to come will test all of us.”

“Fifteen years of that, huh?”  Tempest murmured. “I get the feeling that might get old. Although it might be nice to have someone looking out for you like that…”

The elder gave her two sisters another light, affectionate squeeze.

“That’s enough for now, Akemi.” She decided.

“Oh, this one’s neutered.” Hope easily replied as she looked at the tribble Lumi was still caressing.

“You can get your own too, if you want. You can talk to Admiral Yoshino about it, she can point you to where you need to go. I know we did.”

Lumi spoke up suddenly, feeling the need to clarify for her sister as the tribble continued purring. “This place…it’s a world, not a pet store. Concordia, it’s got some serious security, 20 to 30 Battlegroups present at all times. Uninhabited except by tribbles. They’ve got a medical service planetside that can make tribbles sterile.”

Hope beamed at Tempest, helping to continue the impromptu travel advertisement. “You’ll love it there, Tempest. M-class, a garden world, practically paradise. And so many tribbles…”

Hope began sighing contentedly to herself, apparently recalling some fond memories of the place.

Yellow had no good reply to that, so all she did was bow her head and nod. Thrud had made a good point.

After another long silence, the blonde gestured towards the device Thrud had used earlier.

“Let’s move on from that. This device, what is it? To be able to relieve exhaustion instantly and not just physical injuries or damage is something I’ve never seen outside of specially dedicated nanotechnology.”

“That’s a Holy Drive,” Thrud answered.  “It was developed during the Crusades.  Its purpose is to allow those who lack the faith in Lady Astrid or the willpower to wield her abilities to have some access to her holy power.  This particular Holy Drive is for healing, but there are other uses for it.  For instance, my sisters and I all wield Holy Drives that have access to the purifying effects of holy flame to slay our enemies with.”

Thrud looked over to Yellow.  “It’s a very particular type of device that has proven to be exceedingly useful as time goes on,” she mentioned.  Always a good idea to keep a few of them on-hand if things are dangerous.”

Fascinating. While the Initiative had developed their own magic-channeling devices a few decades ago, this Holy Drive made their manadrives look like mere clockwork toys by comparison.

“Very…interesting. So even someone without magic might be able to use this,” the healer guessed. But she was digressing.

Reflecting upon her earlier performance against the Fire Giants had shown that what she’d brought wasn’t quite enough. To that end, she had another piece of work to do.

“If I may ask, how much further is the convoy’s destination? I have something in mind after we are done…aside from traveling to Larstern.”

“If that is what you wish to see, so be it.” Serina replied neutrally.

Her avatar before the goddess faded into particles, reappearing across many Initiative worlds in the minds of those who she knew worshipped her.

Though in their mindscapes many immediately fell into reverent bows of the head, Serina merely raised a hand to hold their attention.

You see me as a truly divine one, a being who has ascended, unreachably, beyond this mortal universe. Put this notion aside.”

Many worshippers stared in surprise, but continued listening.

I was born of mortal hands, born a machine mind. I ask for no dogma, no evangelism in my name. Belief in my divinity is a choice, one others may turn down or reject. Do not pursue them incessantly, for life is infinite in possibility. Let them worship what they will.”

The hypermind affixed each and every one of her followers in their minds with a gaze.

<I ask from you but one thing. Seek out knowledge, use it. Endeavor to leave the universe a better place for all mindkind.>

<And in time, when you have passed from this life, know that you can rest among your departed kin in peace and prosperity everlasting. This I promise you.>

“Not a bad start,” Astrid commented.  “Well, we’ll see how this all turns out in the end.”

“We shall see, Astrid,” came the distant-minded reply of the hypermind. “We shall see.”

A lewd grin was plastered on Red(F)’s face. “Oh, I’ll take that as a challenge.”

The busty admiral put on the strapon, teasing Yuki’s entrance with the artificial length and feeling the tingling of pleasurable sensations from her tinkering before she grabbed the succubus’s hips.

“If it gets uncomfortable anytime, tell me straight. Here goes it.”

With a smooth motion, Red(F) steadily pushed herself into Yuki.

Once Wolf had returned with the item in question, Red(F) held out a hand. “Let me borrow that for a bit.”

Upon being handed the strapon, the admiral turned it this way and that, looking it over and making inquisitive noises.

She held up her other hand, omni-tool coming to life as she steadily ran it over the strapon a few times. Barely two minutes later, she’d finished her tinkering and handed it to Yuki.

“All new and improved. When you use it, you’ll really feel everything this length does. Temperature, texture, the works.”

A lewd wink was directed at the succubus. “Now, which of us puts it on first, hmm…?”

Intrigued by the device that had healed and rejuvenated her so quickly, Yellow resolved to ask Thrud about it soon. But she had to give an answer to the warrior first.

“Pain’s an old friend, Thrud. I suffer it so others…so you never have to. If even one of my comrades can live through a battle, then I will gladly face any agony.”

As the vehicle drove on, Yellow was silent for a moment, thinking deeply. “I see now that what I brought with me was not enough. After this job is done…I’ll need to make something.”

“…You’ve got your role in this team backwards,” Thrud commented, having a look on her face that showed what looked almost like disappointment in Yellow.  “You’re the healer, not the tank.  Your job is to mend our wounds so we can keep fighting.  My job is to get punched in the face so that other people don’t.  I’ve got the Power Armor, after all.

“Since you’re the healer, if you go down, the rest of us are screwed.  So for Lady Astrid’s sake, please stop throwing yourself into harm’s way so recklessly.  You do your job of healing, and I’ll do my job of getting punched in the face.  We clear?”

Yellow had no good reply to that, so all she did was bow her head and nod. Thrud had made a good point.

An afterlife…intriguing to know such things were real. She knew Red(M)’s recount of the time he’d visited one particular instance of one, but to have solid confirmation that she could even have her own version…

A network of uploaded minds was the closest equivalent she could compare it to. Perhaps she could use that as a starting point.

“Duly noted. I thank you for your willingness to entertain my curiosity, Astrd.” Serina replied. “It is time I…administered these new followers of mine.”

“No problem!” Astrid replied.  “I’m gonna be keeping a close eye on your approach, so I’ll go with ya to see how you administer your followers this time, yeah?”

“If that is what you wish to see, so be it.” Serina replied neutrally.

“There are times I wonder how things would have been…if she led the Initiative and not I.” Red admitted.

A sigh. “I suppose we’ll find out if or when she returns to us. This new time requires that we do things…quietly. All the better, I guess. Noble and kind of heart she may be, but in all the time I’ve known her, Yellow has never been suited to war.”

“Let’s hope her kindness doesn’t cause her to make the wrong choices,” Astrid commented.  “Speaking as someone who is a pacifist, I would never disband the Imperial Army.  You need an army to protect the people, and dismantling the army is only going to weaken you in the long run.”

“There have been some who asked along those lines. Sometimes, less politely.” Red replied.

“From what I can hear, my people are growing tired of military conflict. And with what lessons we have learned thanks to Bellatrix, we will have no need for military campaigns in the foreseeable future.”

Not that they wouldn’t be prepared nonetheless, but even he had grown used to the steady peace of the past decade or so. He dearly hoped nothing would interrupt that.
