There was a moment of silence. Two on one, she was outnumbered. “Okay…” She sighed. “If you say so.”

“I’m, uh… sorry for worrying you…” She added quietly.

“It’s alright.” Aegis reassured her with a gentle pat on the shoulder.

“I guess I’ve grown to care for you all a lot.”

The Titan glanced around Tempest’s quarters, noting how bare and standard it looked. Not uncommon, some new arrivals took a bit of time to spruce up their quarters as well.

Though perhaps Tempest was more of a minimalist? Either way, it probably didn’t hurt to ask.

“Guess you don’t know what to put up here yet, huh? It’s fine, I was the same way too when I first came back.”

Tempest failed to hide the blush that crossed her cheeks.

“Um… yeah.” She laughed nervously, taking a protective step back to her bedroom door.

“I suppose this space does what it’s supposed to, that’s all I need.”

Aegis remained where she was, taking in Tempest’s words and nodding. “If you say so.”

She’d noticed Tempest’s blush, and one of her own soon graced her features. “Just know that if you and your sisters ever feel like having a talk or need cheering up, you can stop by my quarters.”

Aegis wasn’t going to lie, that sounded quite awkward. And Serina’s highly amused private response in her head only exacerbated the awkwardness.

“Not exactly the smoothest way of scouting out a potential girlfriend, Aegis, but it’ll do.”

“…. Thank you, Aegis.”

Tempest smiled at her sincerely, apparently unbothered (or perhaps just oblivious) to the awkwardness of the situation.

“I’d… I’d like that.” She added. “Thanks for looking out for me.”

“Anytime, Tempest.” Aegis responded.

The Titan breathed deeply, and finally let out a sigh as she stood up.

“Well, I’ll leave you be for now. I feel like having a rest. You know where to find me.”

Privately, Aegis felt warm and mellow at the thought of resting in her bed. It was a nice and soft place.

“Yeah, um… I’ll see you in a bit, yeah?” She asked hopefully.

“I’m still planning to meet up with my sisters in like an hour. You’re always welcome to join us too.” She added with a smile.

“Yeah, you will. I’m off, then.” Aegis said with a warm nod.

Just as she was about to leave, she turned back one more time.

“Oh right, a reminder, your sisters are in their quarters at the moment. Right beside yours.” Aegis responded before waving. “See you…”

The Titan promptly left, returning to her own quarters just a short walk away.

As the door to her own bedroom slid shut behind her, Aegis let out a breath she didn’t know she’d held. A quick change into more casual attire, and she slipped into her bed with a content sigh.

Still, a matter gnawed at the back of her mind. When she’d spoken with Tempest earlier, she’d felt warmer. That wasn’t what she thought it was…was it?

The Titan hugged her bolster close, burying her face in it. What had gotten over her just now?

“Well, many of my advisers say fatherhood suits me.” Wolf smiled, his voice quiet, “They’re not wrong.”

He looked at Zelda proudly.

“This one, however, will be my last.” He said, “I’ve fathered a lot of children in my time on this plane of existence, Red… I’ve had bastards running around for years. In the culture I was raised in, it’s not unusual to have a lot of children. Hell, you’re not considered a man until you’ve fathered a bastard. However… I’m happy now that I’ve had Zelda here… She will be my heir.”

He looked over at Red(F). He’d changed considerably since they last saw each other. Some of his scars had faded slightly, except the one close to his left eye. His eyes, which had once had some brightness to them, were dark, weary from years of war. His unruly hair, currently done up in a small ponytail, was now flecked with gray.

Closing his eyes, and sighing, he went and placed Zelda gently into a cot, kissing her forehead. Walking back to the seat, he sat back down.

“A lot has happened.” He said, “A lot of things I regret… a lot of things I don’t.”

Tears formed in his eyes. Carefully, he hugged her.

“I am so… so … sorry…” He said tearfully, his shame taking over, “For everything that I have caused you… for everything I caused the GDI… I am so… so… sorry…”

At that moment, within his office Green was continuing to listen along as the Admiralty discussed a few more matters.

One benefit of being augmented to such a high extent was being able to keep up with multiple parallel lines of thought at once, and so as one part of his mind listened, another contemplated the state of affairs.

Green had always stood for order, and maintaining it was his highest duty. The fact that much of his actions had influenced Initiative threat response over the years hadn’t escaped him. But the words of Bellatrix rang true; his attempts to maintain order had been costly.

But if he was to use gentler means, what then? No matter the species, no matter the history, one principle was universal. Order and authority, in whatever form it took, was always needed.

However unethical it was, only the weight of authority kept societies from collapsing into chaos. And any threats to society would have to be dealt with immediately, with no hesitation, lest it grow out of control.

Green sighed internally. Without the Initiative to keep things safe, pirates and other criminal forces were once again running rampant, few though they were. CONCORD was performing admirably in culling their numbers, but nothing had permanent effect unless their worlds were hit.

The re-establishment of regular contact with the Bouzac was encouraging, but if Wolf was once again out there, then that complicated things.

He’d never liked warriors. Always too stuck up on their sense of honor to do what was necessary to achieve victory. There was no honor in conflict. Either the enemy died or you would. Anyone who thought otherwise was lying to themselves.

Wolf decided that now was the time to act. Stretching a bit, he got into his armour. Within the last few years, he’d upgraded that purposefully for the intention of beating foes like Green – reactive armour to deal with the damage they could deal, along with better shielding augmented with some magic crystals from Terra Ancora. He checked the hidden weapons, making sure they were all up to spec. He specifically checked the shotgun in his mechanical hand.

“Perfect.” He said to himself, then he went over to the console, and sent a message directly to Admiral Green. Punching in the codes, he sighed before putting on the Mask of Truth, turning on the voice scrambler.

“Admiral Green.” He said, “Your time has come. Come face your reckoning.”

The nearly-ending assembly of the Admiralty was interrupted when Green received the message. All eyes went to his avatar as he played it.

As Second Fleet’s leader listened, his eyes closed and he exhaled. This was certainly new.

“Can we trace the signal?”

Serina appeared, pacing around the assembly as a map of the galaxy appeared. Pings zoomed in on its point of transmission.

“Curious. It’s from Eden. Near a concert zone in Altia?”

Red(F)’s eyes widened as she realized exactly who might have sent the message. “Green, do not respond to that message. Let me handle this.”

She left Red(M)’s side, walking near the curved window and tapping her omni-tool for a call. The moment it went through, she spoke up first.

“Wolf, I know that’s you. What the hell are you doing, threatening Green?” she hissed, trying to keep her voice down.

Making some final adjustments to her gear, Yellow shook her head. No question came to mind, not at the moment.

The high possibility of anti-vehicle weapons was admittedly a little troubling, but no matter what, she had sworn to protect these civilians during this quest.

The Valkyrie suit had a few tricks up its sleeve. Perhaps her party would witness them being put to use. That thought brought Yellow some small amusement.

Thrud did have a question to ask herself.  “What sort of monsters can we expect along the roads?” she asked.

“Around these parts? Mostly Ogres and Orcs,” the Caravan leader answered.  “Though there’s word that some Fire Giants are getting involved.  I’d hate to have to fight some Giants, so let’s hope they don’t attack us.  Worst-case scenario, we got dragons to deal with, but most dragons on this continent are in Gulanga, and those dragons generally aren’t hostile.”

Ogres and Orcs didn’t sound like things she couldn’t handle, Yellow reflected. But Giants?

Well, if nothing else, her sidearm at its highest setting and fully linked could blast clean through even battlesuit armor. Hopefully that would be enough to hurt any Giants that tried attacking them.

If any did. With luck, none would.

Yellow sighed as she watched her party prepare to ride along with the convoy.

“Only if they’re necessary. You don’t seem like a purpose-built military ship, from what the scans tell me, and with events the way they are now…” Halcyon trailed off.

A shake of the head. “Ah, never mind that. Just know that if you want to test out your armaments, you can try out our practice zone just outside the Starbase. Either that, or a holodeck sim.”

The repair ship-cum-Chief Engineer scratched her chin thoughtfully, calling up a holoscreen before her.

“In any case, we’ll have to contact your people, let them know you exist.”

“That’s true enough, but I was expected to combat enemies in the Lanes Between and provide air support when needed for Teague,” Firelance replies. “Maybe special forces is the closest military match, as Teague does need to travel between universes to lock the Keyholes in each one, and some are located within active warzones.”

She sighs a little. “Yeah, I would,” she replies. “No doubt Teague’s going to want me fighting alongside him once he finds out. I’m almost certain he’s still alive, but the others…” She shakes her head. “We should, almost certainly.”

Halycon nodded. “Well, I’ll leave that to those who can help. The Oracle Array could help you contact them, Oracle’s always willing to help you find whoever you need.”

She dismissed the holoscreen before her, directing a brief glance upwards. “Akemi, please assist Firelance where necessary.”

A gentle feminine voice responded. “Of course, Chief Engineer.”

The repair vessel smiled. “Anyway, Firelance, that’s pretty much it. Feel free to have a walk around.”

Yellow remained silent, adjusting her gear as she listened along.

If the monsters they might encounter were strong, then she would need to use the full power of her gear. And that meant syncing her suit’s energy links to her sidearm, then pushing the suit itself to its highest performance levels.

Until she could get a vehicle foundry up and running, this would have to do.

A foreboding slow hum sounded, and Yellow’s cybernetic eyes glowed gold as she addressed the convoy leader. “You have my word that I will not allow any of you to come to harm.”

“I should hope so,” the convoy leader mentioned.  “The route we’re taking should be relatively safe, it’s over some open plains, but that’s never stopped a monster ambush before.  You’ll have to load up in our vehicles as we make the journey, and remember to keep an eye out for any unusual activity coming at us.

“Don’t forget, monsters are smart enough to use firearms, and last I checked, there was a raid on a military outpost where some Imperial weapons got stolen.  If they stole an anti-vehicle weapon, they might be using that against this convoy.  Any questions?”

Making some final adjustments to her gear, Yellow shook her head. No question came to mind, not at the moment.

In Yellow’s case, she didn’t even need a datapad, the data being transferred directly into her neural interface.

The blonde nodded, following her team out and gathering some more looks from those who had gathered around them earlier. She ignored them, fixing her gaze on Vesperr’s back.

Once the skies were clear, Yellow activated the wings of her suit, a hum of antigrav-assisted propulsion being accompanied by their signature golden glow that resembled angel wings.

And so she hovered along, following her party until the civilians were found.

Thrud nodded to Yellow at the appearance of her antigrav systems.  “Excellent choice in aesthetics there,” she mentioned.  “Careful not to use it too much, you might get mistaken for one of Lady Astrid’s angels.”

When the party reached the civilians, there were a few vehicles in the convoy, along with some convoy guards, though the guards were generally lightly-armed compared to the Adventurers.  The leader of the convoy nodded to Thrud.  “Ah, you’re the Adventurer Party we hired to help us get through this area then?” he asked.  “Excellent, we could use the extra firepower.  From what I understand, monsters have been getting a bit more restless lately…”

Yellow remained silent, adjusting her gear as she listened along.
