A Gummi Shipgirl

“It’s one of them.” replied the crew leader as they headed for one of the nearby doors. “Well, see you around.”

The crew soon disembarked from the corvette, heading elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Firelance’s guide was a single officer, a Cardassian Lieutenant Commander. She nodded to the Gummi shipgirl as she approached.

“Welcome to Starbase Zephyr, miss Firelance. I’m to take you to Engineering for review.”

The Firelance nods, blushing a little as she continues heading out that way. It was probably gonna be faster than stumbling around for an exit anyways.

”Okay!” Firelance replies. “What kind of review?” she asks, ready to follow her with a spring in her step.

The Lieutenant Commander turned and gestured for Firelance to follow as she began heading for a nearby turbolift.

“A general analysis and overview, meant to gauge your capabilities. Standard stuff. Although if you’re anything to go by, we’ll need some additional data for sure.”

With the exception of nullifier vessels, arcanotech like what Firelance had as part of her was very rare amongst the Initiative’s fleets. Every bit of information they could get counted.

I love having a therapist who is also a millennial because we communicate so fucking well like today she called something “so meta” like folks if you’re considering going to therapy I highly recommend the training clinic at your nearest university because those grad students have been the best therapist I’ve ever had and they always have a sliding pay scale and I literally pay nothing because I make less than 10,000 a year and get fantastic mental health care

#seeing a grad student is a great idea#because 1) they’re actually current and up to date on research and they’re gonna be all about EBP and give you the best most current treatme#and 2)#their caseload is fraction of any therapist’s in the real word so all of their focus is on YOU and they care about you so much!!!#ok not all of their focus is on you because a lot of their focus is also on being in school but all their CLINICAL focus is on you#you’re one of their first clients ever! they want to do their best!!#and 3) (I was gonna do two but I thought of a third)#they’re being supervised and scrutinized and held accountable#and yes this is coming from a speech language pathology grad student not a counseling grad student#but it is a kind of therapy#and I know the same thing applies to other clinical programs (@boxofpigeons)

I am intrigued. Filing this away for later.

As a millennial grad student therapist, I wish more people knew that free or low-cost, up-to-date treatment from closely supervised, highly motivated individuals may be readily available to them. If you’re looking for a training clinic, this website is a good place to start, but also googling “[your city] psychology training clinic” or “psychology training clinic near me” works. Any university with graduate programs in clinical or counseling psychology should have an associated clinic, often separate from their on-campus health/counseling centers (which are another good, typically free resource for anyone enrolled there).

It’s important to note that student therapists will usually leave after a year or so to continue their training at other sites, which can be difficult for individuals looking for long-term treatment. But if you’re in need of something shorter-term (which most of the empirically supported treatments for problems with mood, anxiety, phobias, and substance use are designed to be), or if you just want someone to talk to during a difficult time, your local training clinic might be just the thing!

Given Tempest’s usual pride, it might have come as a surprise to learn that she was one of the last ships to signal readiness to the network. In her mind, carriers had the most diverse arsenal. If anyone would fire that weapon, it would most likely be Aegis, but it wasn’t hard to imagine someone like her being next in that line. Just the possibility of it got under her skin.

Tempest smiled warmly. The idea of having sisters… It was a comforting thought for her.

“It’s nice to meet you Dawn, Adana.” She said. “So… Why don’t we get something to eat, sisters?” She offered with a joking grin. Even just saying that word made her feel less lonely.

As if to humor Tempest, Adana’s stomach made a slight growl. The carrier flushed with embarrassment, but nodded. “I do feel a little hungry…”

Dawn smiled. “Me too. Even a good sim exercise can get one famished.”

Nearby, Aegis had apparently approached Tempest without anyone noticing. “Mind if I join in?”

“Mmm, Jake told me about you.” Yuki said, “He adores you and Platinum, spoke nothing but good things about the both of you.”

Yuki blushed at that.

“I’m Yuki, by the way.” She said, “Yuki Himekawa-Wolf. What are you doing here, Admiral?”

“It’s nice to meet you too.” Yellow replied softly.

Any other time, Yellow would have appreciated the praise directed towards her and Platinum.

But now, Yuki’s appraisal only felt hollow. Certainly, Platinum deserved that praise. But Yellow felt unworthy of it.

And from Yuki’s words, it appeared that she indeed did not know that she’d disappeared. Fair enough.

“I’m here on a personal matter. I’m sorry, but I can’t say more than that.”

“Fair enough.” She said, “Everyone’s got their reasons.”

Feeling the sadness in Yellow’s voice, she took her hands in hers.

“Hey, whatever is going on… Just know you can come talk to me, okay?” She smiled at her, “It’ll just be between you and me, okay? Well, other then what you want to keep to yourself, of course.”

Soon, a little girl who looked like a young, female Wolf ran into the room, jumping into Yuki’s arms.

“And this is Zelda.” Yuki said. The girl looked at Yellow, waving at her.

At that, Yellow returned Yuki’s smile wanly. She could be herself a little more around her. Was Yuki an empath as well?

“Thanks for the concern, Frau Himekawa. Maybe someday.”

When Zelda came in, Yellow’s smile grew a little warmer and she waved back. Children always did hit a soft spot of hers. “Hello, little one.”

The little girl went over to Yellow, hugging her.

Yellow returned Zelda’s hug, looking to Yuki at the same time.

“I’m sorry to request this of you, frau Himekawa, but I must ask that you not mention my presence here. There are things I still have to do.”

A half-truth, but it was close enough.

“That would be exactly where we would go.” the AI remarked, turning to give the crew leader a look.

Said leader nodded. “Set course for the nearest Gate, then sync to Minerva Gate. We’ll be at Zephyr in no time.”

“Done.” The AI responded. “Firelance, I recommend finding a place to sit for the moment. It won’t be a long trip, but some time will be taken nonetheless.”

Firelance nods, finding a small crate of supplies to sit on. “Woohoo! Adventure!” Clearly she already had a preference for that.

The journey to Zephyr must have looked quite strange and fascinating to Firelance, as the corvette headed for the now-repaired Trans-Dimensional Gate in a system outside Bouzac space.

The speed of the corvette’s FTL drive was incredibly high for such a small vessel, and there was only a brief moment where the corvette popped back into normal space, having already cleared transit authorization with the Gate’s monitoring AI. Without further ado, it plunged into the glowing, shifting wormhole that allowed any craft to cross universes.

It emerged out of the Gate within the Minerva system, just a hop and a skip closer to the blue gas giant that was Zephyr.

And to their intended destination; the Starbase that served as home for the Initiative’s now-massive roster of shipgirls.

Indeed it did, as it was a far cry from Firelance’s method of both FTL and multiversal travel. She looked practically mesmerized as she waited for arrival, her silence only interrupted by oohs and ahs.

Starbase Zephyr was a colossal orbital station, more a spaceborne city than anything else.

If anything, it resembled the largest of New Eden’s Citadel-type installations. If Firelance deigned to give the Starbase’s surface a closer look, she would have found rank after rank of defensive emplacements and weaponry.

All that meant for defense, of course.

But what the corvette was headed for was one of the massive shuttle bays. Slipping through the security envelope after the appropriate digital handshakes were exchanged, it passed again through the shield that held back internal atmosphere.

“We’re here. There’s a guide waiting to pick you up.” the crew leader said.

“Wow… I’ve seen stuff like this before… but never this big,” Firelance replies as they approached Starbase Zephyr, a wondrous sense of awe in her voice. She did in fact look a little closer, mostly out of curiousity, and remarked… “Wow, that’s a lot of defensive weaponry.”

“Whoo!” the Firelance says once they arrive, hopping to her feet giddily and heading to the airlock. “This is the right way out of the ship, right?”

“It’s one of them.” replied the crew leader as they headed for one of the nearby doors. “Well, see you around.”

It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.

There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.

He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”

“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”

Several us nodded.

He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.

“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”

“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”

“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”

“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then why lift weights?”

“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.

“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”

And I’ve never forgotten that.

Everyone needs to know this.
