Wolf was sitting in a random bolt hole, smoking a cigarette while drinking some sort of local alcohol. Blowing out the smoke that had generated in his mouth, he put the stub in the nearby ash tray, and took a drink from his glass. Looking over at the entrance, he noticed someone he hadn’t seen in years sitting next to him, taking a double take to be sure the alcohol wasn’t dulling his senses.

“Aegis?” Wolf looked over at the shipgirl, “Wait… what the fuck are you doing here?”

“I feel like I should be the one saying that.” The Titan murmured. “I did not expect you being like this.”

Stretching out her hand, a flask of water shimmered into existence from thin air. Soon taking a sip from it, Aegis spoke again.

“Fath…the Fleet Admiral…had me try to assess the situation over on your end, since I was able to rig up a temporary gateway with my onboard equipment. When I detected you on my sensors…how could I not visit?”

Another moment of silence, as Aegis drank more water. “After the TD Gate to your universe blew up, we had no way of knowing what was happening on your end. The fact that I even got here at all is a miracle.”

“So…how have things been since we last met? Seems rough from what I see.”

Wolf smiled at her, clearly relieved that at least someone from the GDI didn’t hold stuff against him.

“Well… To say things have been rough is a bit of an understatement.” He said, “But… There’s a silver lining to the clouds. I’m actually a lot happier now that I’m not the sole leader of the Bouzaculan Empire. I actually get to relax now that Astrid’s essentially taken control.”

He sat beside her, and ordered another drink.

“I have a feeling the Scorpion’s Hand had a hand in destroying that gate. More then likely to keep us from getting help from you guys and the rest of the Coalition.” Wolf said, “And then there’s all the bullshit I put the admirals through when they were here… All results of me being essentially done with ruling and being constantly pestered… I’m still mad at Admiral Green, but so long as he never enters Bouzaculan Space… Well, I’ll be happy to let bygones be bygones and move on.”

Wolf looked to her, and then he gave her a bit of a hug.

“I’m glad to see you, Aegis… And I’m happy you didn’t just see red as soon as you saw me….” He said, pulling away, “I need your help in reestablishing more… Peaceful relations between our respective factions. I can’t change the past… But I can let go. I’m ready to cut the issue… Just like several years ago after that farce of a duel I put your father through… I still regret that. God, I wish I could see Platinum and Yellow again… And other Red….”

He looked away at that, a tear rolling down his cheek at the mention of Red(F). No matter what he tried, he was still hung up on her.

Aegis didn’t meet his gaze. “It hasn’t been exactly all smooth sailing on our end either.”

A sigh, as she took more sips from the flask of water. “Not long ago, a full quarter of the entire GDI Navy was wiped off the map. That, and some goddess called Bellatrix appeared before the deed, talking to the public about the stuff GDI did wrong. And then…that happened.”

The Titan closed her eyes, recalling the chaos after the full extent of the destruction had become clear to the wider Initiative. Even now, GDI was limiting its actions sharply to avoid overstepping the bounds imposed by Bellatrix.

“A lot of those destroyed ships…they came back. Most of them…angry. It’s taken the Admiralty a lot of effort to channel their anger elsewhere and avoid…incidents.”

A sad smile. “You won’t have to worry about Admiral Green, Wolf. He and the others have a lot on their hands to deal with, even now. We all do. And as much as I’d like to start helping to mend bridges between our factions…until we finish recovering as a whole and a TD Gate finally finds the frequency again from our end, it’ll be a long time before you see any official contact from us.”

Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?

Deutsche Freunde, could you please create for me a word for the extreme depression I feel when I bend down to pick up a piece of litter and discover two more pieces of litter?

    • um = around
    • die Welt = world
  • die Umwelt = environment
    • ver = prefix to indicate something difficult or negative, a change that leads to deterioration or even destruction that is difficult to reverse or to undo, or a strong negative change of the mental state of a person
    • der Müll = garbage, trash, rubbish, litter
    • -ung = -ing
  • die Vermüllung = littering
    • ver- = see before
    • zweifeln = to doubt
    • -ung = see before
  • die Verzweiflung = despair, exasperation, desperation

die Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung = …

This is a german compound on the spot master class and I am LIVING

GDS Tempest Eternal, Thanatos-class carrier.” She corrected, a little too boastfully.

“It’s nice to meet you, doctor.” She added. “What kind of laboratory is this?”

Dr Finnegan glanced around at the surroundings, thinking quickly to try and condense an explanation into something digestible.

“Well, for starters…this lab deals with the bleeding edge of nanotechnology, tuned specifically for applications amongst you girls. So much so that we deal with the Technology Council on a regular basis.”

The good doctor held up a few fingers and began ticking them off. “ECM and ECCM nanoswarms, the repair baths, high-efficiency resource conversion modules…all of these and more, originated right here in this lab.”

Aegis spoke up then, wanting to satisfy part of her curiosity. “About the baths, Dr Finnegan…I’ve heard rumors about some kind of…rapid repair fluid? Are they…true?”

An inscrutable expression came over Dr Finnegan. “So rumors did get out…well, it’s better that I show you what the fuss has been all about.”

Aegis looked at the doctor with some surprise, then to Tempest, and back again. It wasn’t often that she got to see what was up in the labs. This would certainly be new…for the both of them.

Tempest, having only learned of the normal ‘magic bathwater’ a few moments ago, was less impressed, but still slightly intrigued. If it was worthy of a Titan’s attention, it must be important, after all.

“So whatever you were talking about, it’s real?” She questioned to her shipgirl comrade.

“Apparently. I only thought those were rumors, but to actually hear that it’s real…best we follow the doctor and see.” Aegis replied.

And follow they did. Dr Finnegan had led them through a few layers of automated security, passing rooms filled with other scientists and experiments, until they came to another room.

The door’s security let them through, and what the pair saw was fascinating. The room contained many barrels and vials, surrounded by monitoring equipment and their contents manipulated by drones and other machinery. But even amongst all those, the central tank of liquid drew the most attention.

“We’ve been working on this for years, ever since the repair baths were first created. The Admiralty foresaw the potential need for extremely quick, nigh-instant repairs. Preparation for wartime conditions or something, you can ask any of them for more details.” Dr Finnegan explained as he stood before a console and began using it to present a haptic screen containing information on the mystery liquid.

“I can say we’re close, but I must also say that it almost feels like we’re not quite there. We’ve tried almost everything we know and some we didn’t when we first started. Closest we’ve ever been is this formula right now, a biomimetic version that mimics krogan regeneration.”

Dr Finnegan frowned as he looked at the readouts. “We’re missing something. But so far, we have no clue what.”

the truest ADHD ally of our time was my professor who during a field exam handed me a newt and told me to hold it and I was like “what do you want me to do with this” thinking it was for the test and he shrugged and said “it’s just to keep ya busy”

not to be cheesy but my wildlife professors who probably had little to no training specific to teaching students with learning & developmental disabilities still really understood how to teach those students and I have to believe it’s because they have dedicated their lives to understanding life and its value on even the most microscopic level and they’ve learned patience from studying the most still animals and the change in a prairie over time and the growth of trees and they really do go out to the woods to find peace and to share their passion with students and they’re the type of people who stop to listen before they speak

and certain things become clear to a person like that, the sort of person who has spent their life listening and learning and letting the world show them things they don’t know

so when they end up with a student with trouble staying still and being quite during tests, things like this are easy for them. he knew amphibians were my special interest. he knew I needed to be occupied. so he said “here’s a newt”

I wish every teacher were like those professors I was so lucky to have

idk it’s a common joke among wildlife professionals that they got into their work because they don’t like dealing with people but I’ve often found that doing what they do has made them some of the most empathetic, thoughtful people I’ve ever met

“I… this is all a bit confusing for me.” She sighed with frustration. “But one station using that much power? That can’t be good for the Initiative. Why don’t we move on for now? After all that’s happened today… I don’t have much of an appetite.”

{If I might make a suggestion.} Adrianna’s voice arose. {I would personally quite like to see the accommodation area. That would be the next most important place here, I should imagine.}

Seeing that Tempest was finding the repair wing’s warmer temperature uncomfortable, Aegis backtracked her way out of the repair wing and rejoined the carrier at its entrance.

“Well, that’s quite the story in and of itself. One moment…”

Taking ahold of Tempest’s shoulder, Aegis closed her eyes. In her mind, though, she was coordinating an effort with Serina to help keep Tempest comfortable. Since the hypermind was also within her as her shipboard AI, this was fairly trivial.

Right…shields…now the navigational shield…temperature maintenance. There.

Opening her eyes again, Aegis blinked a few times before talking once more with Tempest. “Right, now you should be able to keep a comfortable temperature even inside.”

“To answer your question…at first, these baths didn’t exist. It took a lot of experimentation before the engineers figured out that a bath was the most resource-efficient vector for a direct repair method.”

“The bath water you’re seeing is actually saturated with specialized repair nanites. They draw power from the ambient heat of the water. If or whenever we sustain damage, soaking in these baths lets the nanites repair us. It does take some time, though, but even critical levels of hull damage can be completely negated in about an hour.”

Softer, Aegis couldn’t help but mutter to herself. “I should know, I was there when Lumi got brought in here by Hope, hurt so badly…that incident got poor Lumi restricted to base for a long time even after she recovered.”

Aegis shook her head. “Ah…that was improper of me. Anyway, rumour has it that the scientists down in the labs have been working on a ‘quick-fix’ version of the bath water for a while now. No clue how it’ll be like, or even how close they are to their goal.”

Even though she knew how hot it was, she was now unbothered by it. “Could you… show Adrianna how to do that?” She requested.

As for the baths, at least she could understand the concept well enough.

“It sounds a bit complicated, but I get it. Hopefully I’ll be avoiding here for as long as possible.”

“Transferring environmental control details now.” Serina announced, sending over the procedure to Adrianna.

Aegis, for her part, nodded emphatically. “Yeah, hopefully. We use the baths mostly for leisure, since we’re deployed so rarely. And even when some of us do sortie, frankly the only damage we ever take on these occasions is to our shields.”

Elsewhere in the docks, one could hear what seemed like two shipgirls having a conversation, though whatever they were talking about was lost among the ambient sounds of water flowing and gentle music being played.

Quite a relaxing place, all things considered.

If there was anything Tempest needed around now, it would certainly be to relax. Despite her earlier objections, she was slowly coming to think that she would be returning here quite soon.

“Hey, where is the changing room for this place?” She asked.

“The changing room? Um, just by the entrance. Avis, need a marker for Tempest here. Plan on trying it out, I’m guessing?”

“Of course.” Immediately, a thin but clearly visible haptic guideline was projected on the floor of the repair wing, leading to a room only a few meters away.

“Hm. Might go for a little soak myself…” Aegis murmured. She admitted it to only a few people, but long baths were one of her favorite pastimes.

With any luck, Tempest could soon come to share her appreciation of them as well.

“Wait, what? Not right now!” she protested, rubbing her eyes in the hope that the illusory line would disappear. Adrianna kindly helped with that.

“Not… not unless you wanted to…” she mumbled bashfully. “I-I mean, I don’t have anything to wear! I can’t!”

The Titan’s face reddened as Aegis covered her mouth with a gasp. “Oh! I’m sorry…from how you asked I thought…ah, if you don’t want to right now it’s fine…”

Inside, Aegis was mentally bopping herself on the head for her flustered replies. She was a Titan and the flagship of the GDI Navy, stars be damned, she had to be more composed than that!

“Maybe some other day, then…wait, you said you had nothing to wear? No need to worry, there’s outfits provided for the baths.”

Though to be fair, whether one wanted to wear said outfit or not while soaking in the baths was up to them. Some did, some didn’t. Aegis herself preferred to have the outfit on, for what it was worth.

“Oh, right, the labs. Haven’t taken you there yet, have I?” Aegis asked awkwardly, trying to change the subject.

“N-no you haven’t!” Agreed the equally flustered carrier. Seriously, she ought to be making a bit more of an effort to impress her flagship than this!

“Let’s go there now!” She insisted, gently tugging on Aegis’ arm in her hurry to get back to the turbolift.

Sensing that Tempest really wanted to leave, Aegis obliged. As they departed from the Medical Wing, the Titan thanked Avis for her help before promptly heading for the turbolift to join Tempest.

The trip to the labs was spent in somewhat awkward silence, and as they arrived at the first laboratory they were met by a busy scientist who barely avoided colliding with Aegis.

“Whoa there, sorry…wait, Aegis?! Almost bumped into you. Haven’t seen your friend around here, is she new?” he said somewhat quickly.

To her credit, it seemed the Titan was able to keep up, gesturing to the carrier beside her. “Yes, she’s new. Tempest, this is Doctor Aaron Finnegan. Dr Finnegan, meet Tempest Eternal.”
