“The problem for an A.I. isn’t doing a thousand things at once. It’s slowing down and imparting all that information to humans. I love you all to bits, but you’re something of a bottleneck in my processes.” – Black Box
“I… this is all a bit confusing for me.” She sighed with frustration. “But one station using that much power? That can’t be good for the Initiative. Why don’t we move on for now? After all that’s happened today… I don’t have much of an appetite.”
{If I might make a suggestion.} Adrianna’s voice arose. {I would personally quite like to see the accommodation area. That would be the next most important place here, I should imagine.}
Seeing that Tempest was finding the repair wing’s warmer temperature uncomfortable, Aegis backtracked her way out of the repair wing and rejoined the carrier at its entrance.
“Well, that’s quite the story in and of itself. One moment…”
Taking ahold of Tempest’s shoulder, Aegis closed her eyes. In her mind, though, she was coordinating an effort with Serina to help keep Tempest comfortable. Since the hypermind was also within her as her shipboard AI, this was fairly trivial.
Right…shields…now the navigational shield…temperature maintenance. There.
Opening her eyes again, Aegis blinked a few times before talking once more with Tempest. “Right, now you should be able to keep a comfortable temperature even inside.”
“To answer your question…at first, these baths didn’t exist. It took a lot of experimentation before the engineers figured out that a bath was the most resource-efficient vector for a direct repair method.”
“The bath water you’re seeing is actually saturated with specialized repair nanites. They draw power from the ambient heat of the water. If or whenever we sustain damage, soaking in these baths lets the nanites repair us. It does take some time, though, but even critical levels of hull damage can be completely negated in about an hour.”
Softer, Aegis couldn’t help but mutter to herself. “I should know, I was there when Lumi got brought in here by Hope, hurt so badly…that incident got poor Lumi restricted to base for a long time even after she recovered.”
Aegis shook her head. “Ah…that was improper of me. Anyway, rumour has it that the scientists down in the labs have been working on a ‘quick-fix’ version of the bath water for a while now. No clue how it’ll be like, or even how close they are to their goal.”
Even though she knew how hot it was, she was now unbothered by it. “Could you… show Adrianna how to do that?” She requested.
As for the baths, at least she could understand the concept well enough.
“It sounds a bit complicated, but I get it. Hopefully I’ll be avoiding here for as long as possible.”
“Transferring environmental control details now.” Serina announced, sending over the procedure to Adrianna.
Aegis, for her part, nodded emphatically. “Yeah, hopefully. We use the baths mostly for leisure, since we’re deployed so rarely. And even when some of us do sortie, frankly the only damage we ever take on these occasions is to our shields.”
Elsewhere in the docks, one could hear what seemed like two shipgirls having a conversation, though whatever they were talking about was lost among the ambient sounds of water flowing and gentle music being played.
“I… this is all a bit confusing for me.” She sighed with frustration. “But one station using that much power? That can’t be good for the Initiative. Why don’t we move on for now? After all that’s happened today… I don’t have much of an appetite.”

Friend: “Hey, I haven’t seen you in forever! how are you?”
me: “Fine, thanks.”
Lemony Snicket from outta nowhere: “Of course, in this case, ‘fine’ is only meant to reassure. She has never been less fine, nor was she ever fine in the first place. Here, the word ‘fine’ could be defined as ‘I am actually slowly dying on the inside, but don’t wish for anyone to worry’.

“You haven’t seen a single male yet,” Aegis corrected.
With a thought, the Titan brought up a 3D display of the Starbase, gesturing to a separate area a few dozen floors below the central core that was Engineering.
“Most of the male personnel here are scientists and naval engineers, both of whom occupy the labs and the core of Engineering. I’ll take you to tour the labs later, don’t worry. There’s also the Admiral in charge of this Starbase, Vice Admiral Amane Yoshino, but she mostly works way up in the administrative tower. She reports directly to the Fleet Admiral, comes around often to talk with us.”
Another gesture and another large area was highlighted, this one only a few floors below Engineering and connected by many turbolifts and Blink nodes. “Medical Bay is here, combined with the repair docks. It serves the medical and repair needs of both us shipgirls and the regular personnel.”
Thinking over what Adrianna had said about relationships, Aegis felt it necessary to fill in with the right details.
“Anyway, Adrianna, to further clarify what you surmised…well, insofar as relationships go, they aren’t really forbidden. The Admiralty talked it out with the Executive Assembly a few years ago, and…well, long story short, since we’re now people as far as the Charter’s concerned, romances like the one between Hope and Lumi have the green light, so to speak.”
Tempest shuddered. While it was good that two ships had found happiness, the fact that they were of the same class still disturbed her somewhat.
She shook her head, physically ridding herself of those thoughts. “I think that stuff can wait for another time. It’s way too early to be talking about it.”
Even if she saw no issue with finding a romantic partner, it would require exploring her sexuality, and by extension accepting her new existence as a human; that was what she was most fearful of, simply coming to terms with it all.
“I think that should be our next stop.” She decided, pointing to the sickbay. “I need to know how they plan on repairing me looking like this.”
“Medbay first, then? Alright.” Aegis remarked, noting her choice of destination.
“Hope there won’t be too many there. Shouldn’t be, at this hour.”
She suspected there were always going to be some people there, shipgirl or otherwise. While most illnesses were a thing of the past, the same couldn’t be said for certain degrees of injuries, whatever their cause.
Aegis glanced at Tempest’s pocketwatch. “Just so you know, Tempest, you can either bring that watch along with you, or keep it here in your quarters for safekeeping.”
Tempest’s hands tightened around the watch protectively. Despite being less powerful than Aegis, something about the carrier suggested that it would take even more than a Titan to pry it away from her.
{I might be of some assistance.} Adrianna spoke. At the same time, the replicator came to life again. This time, it produced a simple gold chain. Tempest rushed over, and sensing what to do, attached both ends of it to the watch.
Then, she put it over her head, wearing it as a necklace. The watched rested neatly on her chest, and she felt her heartbeat resonate with its soothing tick.
“I’m ready.” She said at last. “Let’s go!”
“Alright then, follow me.” Aegis replied with a smile.
They left Tempest’s quarters behind, taking the nearest turbolift down to the Medical Bay. The ride itself was fast, and as they exited out into the entrance to Medical an automated voice came over the network.
“Now arriving at: Medical Bay.”
Aegis led the way as usual, the doors to the Medical Bay sliding open with a gentle hiss. Immediately the temperature felt just a little colder, and the scent hit the pair.
Or more accurately…the complete lack of a scent. If either Aegis or Tempest desired to use their sensors then for a sweep, they would have found absolutely zero traces of any bacteria or viruses in the surroundings.
In many ways, this was by design. The stark white cleanliness of Medical Bay evoked a sense of sterility.
“Nice to see you, Aegis. All fine, I hope?”
The identity behind the feminine voice flashed into being right beside Aegis, a nurse, walking along with her and Tempest. The Titan smiled. “Hello to you too, Avis. And yes, I’m fine. Just taking a new arrival for a tour. Third Wave.”
The AI now known as Avis nodded, glancing at Tempest. “I see. Always do like seeing a new face’s reaction to these things. Well, I’ll leave you to it.”
As Avis’ holographic form vanished, Aegis stopped before a split into two small corridors. A haptic sign between the split pointed to both directions. On the left was a ‘Medical’ readout, and on the right was ‘Repair’.
Aegis began leading Tempest rightward. “This way.”
Down the corridor was another sliding door, which opened to reveal a surprisingly warmer place. Almost like…a bathhouse?
today my therapist told me that a panic attack consumes about the same amount of energy as running a marathon and suddenly my lack of energy doesn’t seem so strange
it’s SO important to take care of yourself after a panic attack! it drains so much energy and many people feel selfish taking time after an attack to care for themselves but it’s so important!!! drink tea and read or take a bath or just go to sleep. let your body and mind relax and recuperate.
